I saw the pictures too. All ok, one back injury...busses took pax and crew to terminal.

Must have been pretty bad smoke if evacuation was ordered...wonder if flame was present.

happened in last 15 minutes of flight... pack problems? electrical problems? some hydraulic system activated and leaked into cabin (far fetched?)

oh well, glad they are ok...and what would you do if you were over the ocean and the checklists didn't work...yikes!

Plane makes emergency landing at O'Hare
By Marni Pyke | Daily Herald Staff
Published: 12/14/2007 4:50 PM

Passengers and crew of a jetliner traveling from China to O'Hare International Airport had to be evacuated upon landing this afternoon because of smoke in the cabin.

One passenger suffered minor back pain and was taken to hospital but the rest of the 269 travelers and crew were uninjured, officials said.

The incident happened at about 3:55 p.m. after United Flight 836 landed in Chicago. The Boeing 777 stopped on a taxiway so emergency chutes could be deployed, Federal Aviation Authority spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said.

Buses took the passengers back to the terminal.

The flight set off from Shanghai and was intended to land in Chicago, then head to New York City.

Recirc Fan?

777 into Heathrow last year, smoke and strong odor by cabin crew and pax during descent, got recirc fan EICAS on short final (clear day, emergency vector provided)...very uncomfortable symptoms, but ultimately was a lower recirculating fan....insidious onset with rapidly excalating intensity as cabin differential reduced in descent. Had we gotten EICAS msg earlier, we would have felt better doing that procedure and waiting for smoke/odor to abate...either way, we were heading straight for the runway (27L with two minute taxi to one of the old J-gates, which we elected to do with LHR Fire Chief concurrence). Recirc Fans having been off for approx. 10 minutes, there were no cabin indications upon opening main doors. Maintenance found the failed fan. Same model 777-200B, same airline.
