Lightbulb Virus warning - America/Islam poll

Have just picked this warning up locally - may be of help to Ppruners ........

Experts are warning of a new file-deleting virus masquerading as a program that allows people to vote by e-mail on whether the United States should go to war will arrive in the UK soon. The virus appears with the subject line: "Peace between America and Islam!" and the body of the e-mail reads: "Hi. Is it a war against America or Islam!? Let's vote to live in peace!"....

From the McAfee Virus Information Library. See more at the link.

W32/Vote@MM

--- Update September 25, 2001 ---
AVERT has received very few customer samples of this threat.
This mass-mailing worm is detected heuristically, with program heuristics turned on, as New Backdoor with the 4100 (or newer) DAT files. Full non-heuristic detection was include in the 4163 DATs.

W32/Vote@MM is a mass-mailing worm which can delete system files. It arrives with an email message containing the following information:

Subject: Fwd:Peace BeTweeN AmeriCa And IsLaM !
Body:

Hi
iS iT A waR Against AmeriCa Or IsLaM !?
Let's Vote To Live in Peace!

This one can stay here. Hopefully some people who still have a habit of opening attachments without protecting their PC's will notice ans we won't get too flooded with this virus.

Copy sent to Computer & Internet Issues forum.

And dont accept any program from people you dont know! Even ones I get from ones I do know, Ill check with them first that the program they sent was from them, especialy if the program sent isnt in character with the sender.

As well as the excellent advice above it is time to consider other options, as I recently advised a friend:

Or more sucessfully before making the change to linux

1. Download

Ieradicator - http://www.98lite.net/ieradicator.html
Opera - http://www.opera.com/download/ (get the one with java)
Eudora Light - http://www.eudora.com/products/eudora/download/

2. Backup outlook address book, mail and IE bookmarks

3. Install Opera and Eudora

4. Import IE bookmarks into Opera, outlook to Eudora - http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1507hq.html

5. Remove outlook via Settings - Add/remove programs

6. Run IEradicator

7. Watch the process with some feeling of joy

8. Notice how much faster your machine is. Be nervous about security
rather than terrified.
