Garuda again?
Trying to get to the bottom of an alleged incident involving a Garuda Airlines flight from Denpasar to Balikpapan in East Kalimantan via Makassar on Friday evening 27th July 2007. According to a usually reliable witness in business class on that flight, after taking off from Makassar there was a "thump" (in his words) followed by the oxygen masks dropping down and then a descent. He stated that there was a decompression, he couldn't breathe in the cabin and had to try 3 different masks until he found one that worked. Another expat in business class stated that he smelt smoke. After another 20 minutes the pilot announced that "All was ok, it was a technical hitch". There have been no reports in the local papers and despite several of us trying to verify this incident, we cannot establish that this really happened therefore all I'm asking is if anybody else out there has heard about it also.

If the masks came down, then the burning smell was more than likely coming from dust on the hot oxygen-mask canisters. Absolutely normal. But why did they come down in the first place and why did apparantly a lot of them not work?
Anyway, passenger accounts should usually be taken with a large pinch of salt.

OK Thanks for the replies. Maybe much ado about nothing. But in gun shy Indonesian skies it doesn't hurt to ask. I'm flying the same route next week with my family. Cheers.
