try this ....

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/...s/4286836.html

A faulty gauge caused Continental Flight 29 to land as a precautionary measure, spokeswoman Julie King of Houston-based Continental said.

"There was a gauge that indicated there was an issue with one of the engines and we landed as a precautionary measure," she said. "Maintenance checked it out and we are in the process of refueling the aircraft."

You can not even make a missed approach these days without seeing it make the headlines somewhere.

Continental B757-200 in trouble..

According to Icelandic media there was a full scale emergency at KEF
Airport when the aircraft came in for the emergency landing.
The Icelandic Coast Guard dispatched its helicopters and one of its ships
because a ditching was possible due to one engine being shut down and the
other was not running at full power. All in all 2000 people were put on alert
in local hospitals as well as members of rescue squadrons. Telephone
centers could not handle all the SMS messages being sent and there was
also a misunderstanding that the aircraft was approaching REK airport.
This was definately a full scale emergency according to local media reports.

Sounds a little more serious than what the airline PR department was putting out.

Looks like Rolls engines on the plane.

This wet my pants!!
Makes a not too bad instructional video for people who think runways should be assigned for political rather than met reasons. I used it to demonstrate the effect of strong winds for those who don't know from the sharp end but take decisions for them (or try to impose them).

If that state of emergency was declared , was surely accordinly to the information given by the aircraft´s commander. At least they had a very fast reponse and had all the equipment ready jus in case.Don´t think these guys have nothing to do but sit on their butts all day ; they have lots of outcalls due to fishing ships , car accidents and people trap in bad weather, if you know how icelandic weather is, plus you have one of the biggest controled airspace with lots of intl Flts crossing it.If you ever want to wet yout pants you can come with me any time and try a non- precision app into Kef with 50g65 kts/ 800mtrs vis on the winter with blowing snow; at least you could give these guys some credit just for beign there after maybe a 12 hours shift they might be the ones that ´ll save your ass someday. By the way the b 757-200 is etops certified and I ve had flew it all the way from Kef to Florida.

Standard ETOPS

Apart from raising some slight interest as to exactly which gauge went tech, the whole story is a non story turned into a boring story about how standard proceedures are applied and why ETOPS are safely conducted in huge numbers worldwide on a daily basis.

Yep; prefer to be whingeing about a beat-up than a splash-down.

One hopes this comment was sarcastic; CO have been operating 757s over the pond for years. Perfect a/c for thin point-to-pointers like into Bristol, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Stockholm, Oslo, Dublin... Plus they've been the perfect a/c for Icelandair for some time now.

I think if I were in Bristol and needed to go to NY, I'd rather go point-to-point on a 757 than have to schlep backwards to EGLL or EGKK just to get on something with another aisle. Food'll taste the same and the the backs of my eyelids won't look any different .

Smaller customs line at the other end, too.

Why all the fuss about a B757 doing a Trans Atlantic flight? I have taken the Monarch charters across to MCO using a B757-200ER (with a stop at Bangor) which was fine. Also, BA used to do a 757 to JFK from Manchester so this is nothing new. Finally Icelandair use their B757's on services across to the US.

Are you sure? One engine out, one engine not operating properly, not exactly a situation I'd like to find myself in over the atlantic.

There seems to be some confusion here over what the exact problem was. Only once we know the facts will we know if it was a "non-event" or not. So at the moment it's a rumour.

Once we find out the facts it will become news. What a coincidence that the name of this forum is rumours and news, eh?

All I can say is this is definitely a bogus assumption on someones part. I was supposed to be the Captain on that flight but did EGCC instead. So the fact remains it was a non-event, if you wish to make more of it than it is..... please do so.

There are more 757s that cross the Atlantic every day than you see 737 in most regional airports.
The airlines PR Dept always play events down after they occur.
Icelandic Coast guards know what they are doing, probably more so that in many other countries.

When I was visiting KEF ATC a few years back, one made me listento some R/T tapes , from the Falcon bound for Narssasuaq that decided to divert to REK and ended up in the water a few miles off the coast of Iceland, to the Pan Am A310 on one engine a 2000 ft to avoid icing , above the sea in terrible weather with 300 Nm to go... They all finaly made it .
REK and KEF are the only places to go when you down that corner of the Atlantic, and the weather is generally not your standard central US type. Be nice to the guys on the ground down there, you might need them one day.
