Passenger plane crashes in Russia

A Russian airliner with 200 people on board has crashed during landing.
The Airbus A-310 plane had flown from Moscow when it crashed at Irkutsk airport in Siberia. It is not known if anyone was killed.

Russian media reported that the plane slid off the runway and hit a building when trying to land.

The Itar-Tass news agency said 40 people were taken to hospitals after the crash at 0300 local time on Monday [2300 GMT Sunday].

CNN

Now reporting at least 150 fatalities...not great, as it seems to be more each time I see the reports. Now rumoured to be a EA300...

Two hundred feared dead in plane crash

Sunday Jul 9 12:51 AEST
AP - A plane carrying 200 people has crashed in Siberia with most of those on board feared dead.
The plane crashed on landing at 2.50am (0850 AEST), veering off the runway and bursting into flames, Russian emergency ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova said.
Andrianova said 43 people had been taken to a hospital, nine of them suffering from burns, and another 10 managed to escape.
But most of the other passengers were feared dead, she said.
The plane carried 192 passengers a crew of eight, she said.
"The aircraft veered off the runway on landing. It was travelling at a terrific speed," Andrianova said.
The plane hit a concrete barrier, collapsing the front section of the aircraft, she said. It then burst into flames.
The aircraft was on a flight from Moscow to Irkutsk, near Lake Baikal.
It took five emergency services more than two hours to extinguish the flames, Andrianova said.

BBC are reporting 120 confirmed dead (a large number are children) and 53 confirmed taken to hospital so far. Also maybe a dozen or so escaped the wreckage and Russian authorities are asking for them to report in to confirm they are alive.

"New airplane for S7"?

It appears to have been one of the two A310-324s that have been in the fleet since July 2004.

Chris,

There's no mention of 'Pilot Error' regarding this crash (if you read the article more carefully, the 'Pilot Error' quote refers to a previous crash at the same field). If I were you, I would remove the BOLD HEADLINES at the top of your post lest you incur the wrath of less forgiving, fellow pprune readers. As always with these things it's far too early to be apportioning blame. . .

Either way a very sad event.

Google Earth shows the airfield layout very clearly. There is a single runway 12/30 and the populated area at the end of 30 (landing direction) appears as in the news photo above. There is also evidence that the runway had been extended at the 12 threshold recently.

I measure the runway at 3210 metres so it would appear to be suitable for the A-310............

FDRs recovered

IRKUTSK July 9 (Interfax) - The flight data recorders of the A310 airliner, which crashed in a runway accident in Irkutsk on Sunday, have been brought to the Regional Emergency Situations Commission.

The flight recorders have not been damaged and the recordings will be read soon.

Updated reports indicate that the plane was carrying 192 passengers, six flight attendants and two crew. Three female flight attendants have survived the crash and are in hospital.

According to Sibir Airlines, the plane's operator, "neither the air controlers, nor mission control reported any emergencies when the plane was landing," a Sibir spokesman said.

The company ran its first A310 flight from Irkutsk to Moscow in July 2004.

Sibir has ten airliners of this class. sd

I'm just watching the report on Sky News. They say 120 are dead, saying: 'the death toll would rise to 150'

1 ton of fuel, and going VERY fast, It seems to me it burst into flames before hitting buildings at the end of the runway.

192 pax, 8 crew, 14 of which were children (talks about psychological treatment)

There are survivors

Moist runway or tech difficulties to blame, with a posibility of the fuel burning on landing.

A mobile phone has caught footage of it's landing - that could help in the investigation. A small team of experts from Moscow have been lined up for the job, who are now going through the black boxes.

Sky News says it should be a few days before it's fully investigated.

They skimp on the details a bit basic on the facts at Sky, but at least they don't s**t stir like the BBC do.

(Please pardon the French - it's just an issue I feel strongly about)

BBC Bulletins

The early BBC TV footage showed the A310 on fire but also showed the burning tail of an Il-76 and the interior of a cockpit on fire clearly showing rows of four engine instruments - was an Il-76 inlvolved as well ?
