Post "Byers faces legal challenge on open skies"

UK paper the Independent reports today (31-01-02) that BMI has lodged a complaint with Brussels over the UK's support for the Bermuda II treaty.

Sir Michael Bishop is threatening Secretary of State for Transport, Stephen Byers, with legal action for abandoning talks on Open Skies.. . [quote] The Government must not meekly give up on liberalisation just because BA and AA have walked away from their alliance.

BMIs legal advisers said that they are seeking to have the existing agreements deemed illegal and anti-competitive. If that happens, they would then have evidence (they said) for damages in the High Court.
