Exclamation LPL has least aircraft noise in UK.... ;o)

Courtesy of the Daily Post:. .. . Airport in noise testing bungle . .. .Bosses at Liverpool John Lennon Airport have spent 200,000 GBP on noise monitoring equipment - only to find they can't work it. . .Two devices were installed in Merseyside after complaints from residents about aircraft noise.. .But three months after they were put in place, the airport's environmental team has been unable to record any readings. . .Engineers have failed to solve the problems and now airport chiefs have drafted in specialists from Denmark. . .Andrew Dutton, environmental manager at the airport, said "They were put in place over the winter so this is not a case of usshirking any responsibilities. This kind of technology is so advanced that there are bound to be a few hiccups. There have been a number of problems with the power supply and the telephone lines that are making the integration into the system extremely difficult. But we hope to be fully operational within the next few days." . .The noise monitoring terminals (NMT) are based at a school in Hale and a country park in Eastham, Wirral. As well as noise, they are supposed to measure planes' altitude and check they are adhering to flight paths.. .But campaigners against noise pollution have criticised airport chiefs for not acting sooner. . .Ben Chapman, wirral South MP, who has been campaigning for monitoring on behalf of residents for months, said "Whatever the causes, it is very important that it is rectified and functioning as soon as possible." <end>. .. .Also mentioned on the radio over the weekend, "fed-up residents of Hale village are preparing a case to prosecute the airport over the increase of noise." . .. .160

Wink

Could the noise issue be just a blind in order for the airport to re-align the runway, as they wished to do before MAN was granted permission for R2? Re-alignement of the runway at LPL would certainly give them future options on both the terminal and runways fronts. With a re-alignment Liverpool would be able to eliminate any overflight on aproach or departures of local residential areas and also allow for three more future runways in the Mersey Estuary, bedrock being only six feet below high water that far up river. And at the rate of expansion in air travel in Western Europe I would venture that it won't be too long before extra runway and terminal capacity are needed almost everywhere in Europe.

Sorry to spoil the party but this equipment is working OK - there are just bits of software awaited to fine tune the system. It was just a case of an aiport opponent getting a symphatetic ear from an over-enthusiastic journalist.
