Understand they had problems with the gear on takeoff, returned and did a gear up landing. No injuries. Aircraft still on runway and runway still closed. All traffic diverted to MBA / EBB / JRO.

Nothing on NOTAM.

Was this one one with the broken beams that used to flex when gear was retracted and the UK CAA grounded ?

The a/c concerned, TF-ARJ, is an Air Atlanta (Iceland) B747 which operates for Cargolux.

Odd, ain't it.

JAL has 747 freighters.
ANA has 747 freighters as well.
Lots of 'em.

Several other airlines as well.
Quite a few more than Air Atlanta.

Yet, we seem to hear of Air Atlanta freighters having 'problems' while other carriers, with quite a few more airplanes, have few/none.

Why are we not surprised?
Could Air Atlanta's maintenance not be up to snuff?
As in, shades of the old days, perhaps.
Most remember...grounded in the UK for a week or so, a few years ago.

Then the overrun in SHJ.
Wonder if anyone is looking just below the surface to find the problems?
Or, trying to sweep 'em under the rug?
If the latter, no surprise there.

from the cargolux website....

"Due to the hydraulic failure the left hand main landing gear did not fully extend, causing minor damage to the left hand landing gear door and wheel assembly no 3 during the landing, as visual inspection later confirmed"

so did it do a wheels up landing or not?

So long as you're careful, the jumbo will land quite happily on just the inner or outer main gear.

Cool

Not the first time a gear has failed to lock when alternate is used, usually a good greasing will solve it, but not much good when it's circling the airfield Even with all the weight of the truck they can hang up with the stiction. It relies on a couple of small springs (bungees!) to push the side brace that last inch or so to lock the leg.
Judicious use of aerobatics could have helped

as usual your eternal hatred for all things AAI has colored your post. You once again only see what you want to see, ignoring fact and relevant information.
But, saying that, you appear to be a cast off from the current world of aviation, it has moved on, you have not.
Perhaps all you are looking for is a response, like a child seeking negative attention.
What a sad person you must be.

Hang on, Canadair,

I flew for AAI for several years on their B747 fleet, pax and freight, 100s, 200s and 300s, and got them out of several tight situations in my time!

All I managed to get in return was a severe kick in the teeth each time, or totally ignored, after the crisis was over and I was no longer needed.

I left them in eary 2003 from their KL base, and never looked back!

I know quite a bit about the operations of AAI, and also know that the aircrews are the only thing holding the company together!

I don't like them at all either, not one bit, and let anybody thats interested know that, and exactly how that fact came to be!

Cheers, FD
