WIF DHC8-100 crash at Hammerfest (PICS)

29 passengers and 3 crew taken to hospital.

Crew initiated a go-around on short final due to winds, but a gust slammed the aircraft into the ground.

Right main landinggear collapsed.

That's a pretty hefty mountain right next door to the field! The windsock in the third picture shows a side wind blowing toward the mountain though.

The weather looks good in the photos.... and given the position of the plane on the taxiway, are you sure the undercarriage just did not collapse for some other reason when taxiing in?

Had a similar landing incident at Plymouth Airport EGHD with Dash-8-300 GBRYP a few years back - a/c hit winshear on short finals and slammed onto the deck causing the left main gear to collapse.

Looks like the fuse pin saved the day again and avoided the landing gear puncturing the fuel tank and should also cause a slow collapse of the gear, hence the position of the aircraft.

Have tried to find the pics on the internet but no luck.....there are some around. At least with the Wideroe a/c the landing gear did what it was designed to do.

ps the Wideroe a/c isn't a -300

This is WIFs 5th nasty on the STOL airports in Norway in the last 5 years, one of which was a unstabilized approach and hard ladning at Hammerfest in 2001. (The one at Førde was allso an unstabilized approach I belive)

Incidents at Hammerfest, Båtsfjord, Vadsø and Førde all ended in eighter hull loss (1) or bending the aircraft "slightly".

(Yes, I know, this might not have anything to do with the former incidents......)

ps the Wideroe a/c isn't a -300

(I know, the runway at Hammerfest is only 880-ish meters long, runaway fingers on the keyboard I'm afraid )

If you look at the skid marks on the runway, it appears it happened on the runway!

All these shots of 'pranged' Dash-8's........dear oh dear!! The UK Air Accident Investigation Branch report on Plymouth can be found at www.aaib.gov.uk and put G BRYP in the search in the top right, The rate of decent on short finals was 1800 feet per minute.

You may also see another entry for this a/c where soon after returning to service the nosewheel got torn off on pushback at MAN. ooopps

According to the local paper today, this is the third nasty at Hammerfest since 99, alle ending in collapse of landing gear or a trip well outside the runway.

That brings the tally up to 6......
