Be extra carefull out there on the 12th Dec
It pains me to write this (but it is a rumour network!), but I am compelled to do so. Those that know me, know that I have spent some considerable time in the ME and I have a rough and imperfect understanding of the culture and the religion. I have no access to my references as I write, so take it as is. I am on memory and instinct here.
The 27th Day of Ramadan is particularly special for the Muslim. It is a day of forgiveness and a day for special deeds. It was the day (in history) that the Koran was revealed in full. This falls on the 12th December this year.
I have a chilling feeling (not a common feeling -I happily confess) that this might be a special day for our bearded "friends". So for nothing more than a feeble warning, and not wishing to be a boy crying wolf. Be extra careful out there people...

Laylat al-Qadr
This is the night of the Qadr. The term Al-Qadr has been frequently translated as "the power". A better translation may be "the value" or "the decree" because Allah says the value of this night is better than one thousand months, a life time of over eighty-three years. Allah sends His decrees in this night. This is the night when the Qur'an was revealed. Allah says in the Qur'an:
"We have indeed revealed this (the Qur'an) in the Night of Value (or Measure). And what will explain to you what the Night of Value is? The Night of Value is better than a thousand months. Therein come down angels and the Spirit (the angel Gabriel) by Allah's permission with all decrees. (That night is) Peace until the rising of the dawn." 97:1-5
The night of value is a gift to mankind from Allah. However, it is not clear which night is Laylat al-Qadr. Some reports by companions of the Prophet(S) allude it to be the 27th night of the month of Ramadan, but many more sayings point to any of the odd date nights during the last third of the month of Ramadan. According to authentic teachings of the Prophet Muhammad(S) Muslims are advised to spend the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th nights of Ramadan in worship and doing good works to assure finding Laylat al-Qadr. A portion of the Muslims stay up all night in prayers and good works, however, the Prophet(S) and his companions used to sleep at least one-third of the night.
In Muslim countries, the 27th of Ramadan is a holiday to enable people to rest during the day after all night of worship. Schools are closed from the 27th of Ramadan through the 2nd of Shawwal (5 to 6 days) to combine Laylat al-Qadr and 'Eid al-Fitr observances.

I would also be wary throughout the Christmas period. This being a Christian celebration I could see maximum religious impact at this time. The answer is ever vigilance. It has been proven that the unimaginable can happen.

...and indeed DTLR AVSEC have issued a warning to all airlines, airports, cargo companies etc warning of SIGNIFICANT but non specific risk to UK aviation during this period; and reminding everyone that all the enhanced security measures must be implemented concientiously.
Of course, it's not just Islamic terrorists we need to be on the look out for - our friends from across the Irish Sea tend to mount a few spectaculars at this time of year as well ... and the Real IRA must be hurting from the recent arrests...
