PAs on 121.5

Well we have all done it, or something similar.

I would, however, like to commend whoever performed the 4 minute monologue on 121.5 this afternoon, on his way to Malaga, for his performance. Rarely have I heard such an informative, in depth, well structured and, frankly, splendid example of a PA.

My favourite bit had to be,
"...the temperature outside now is -57 degrees, for those of you who collect statistics...."

You brought some cheer to this festive season, thanks.

Even worse is when, in the middle of the night over Africa, you press the PA button in instead of the VHF one.

You then shout in your best and loudest voice:

"ALL STATIONS THIS IS......"

At least it saved me having to give a wake up call at the top of descent as they were all still sitting bolt upright with their eyes frozen open in terror.

Better than USAF who seem to think the military equivilant is their dedicated frequency.

This is why I never use the boom mike to do a PA, only the handset on the pedestal. Can't stuff it up that way.

I was headed into JFK one late night and I used ATC/VHF 1 to maek what I thought was a PA announcement.

My announcement:
Ladies and gentleman, we are headed into New York Kennedy on a beautiful nice and Long Island is just off of our right. Lots of New Yorkers live there. The temperature is 15C and 59F and we'll be landing to the northwest from over the water. It will be a very short taxi time to the gate.

Unfortunately, I did it on approach control frequency. The NYC APP guy (in his NY accent) said that was very nice, but you did it on APP freq.

The only thing I could think to do was to say on APP freq:
And I have to tell you that the controllers in New York are some of the finest in the world. They always let us keep our speed up to 250 knots to the marker. This is for fuel saving and to expedite our arrival keeping with the fantastic record that New York has on arrival aircraft and United's exemplary ontime record!

Needless to say, the guy broke out laughing and agreed that he just said that speed is your discretion. You are #1 and keep on truckin'

That made my night......I made my connecting flight.....
