Cool Air India Hiring Foreign Pilots

Hi All,
Check this one out
( Source : Business Standard and Rediff.com )
A-I may hire foreign pilots

April 08, 2004 16:39 IST

Air-India is considering to take on contract foreign pilots to meet any shortfall as part of its major expansion plans.

"We are considering to take around 15-20 foreign pilots and we are having discussions with a company for taking them on a temporary period till we meet our requirements," A-I sources said in Mumbai on Thursday.

The airline, which is launching its first flight to Los Angeles on the west coast of the US from June 11, needs pilots as it is planning to operate flights to San Francisco next year and reintroduce services to Australia, the sources added.

"This arrangement of taking pilots on contract is purely a temporary arrangement even as we induct and expedite training our own pilots. We are also looking at enhancing productivity of our own pilots," the sources said.

"This course has been adopted as A-I is all set to ensure that nothing hampers its growth plans," they said.

According to sources, at least 14 pilots from Airbus A310 are now undergoing training on the Boeing 747-400s while it is recruiting around 30 to 40 pilots every quarter to have a total of around 160 pilots by the end of 18 months.

The airline presently has a strength of around 450 pilots and is looking at a strength of around 700-800 in the next five to seven years, depending on the network expansion.

The airline, which presently has a fleet of 33 aircraft, including 14 aircraft on lease, intends to take two more 747-400s and one A310 this year.

Joles

They are offering B744 Captains $8500 pm. What a joke, nearly as little as EK!

However there are always retired Nigels who might want it!

About the same pay as LCC Tiger Airways operating A320s out of Singapore, but a little more than Air HongKong operating A300s based out of the same port?

So many airlines to fly, so little time.

If that $8500 per month is true then what about the present AI Captain's salary? Is it anywhere near that figure?

If not, then like many airlines before, it will lead to yet another divisive problem on the flightdeck and in the crew room. A shame, because wherever I have met the AI crews around the world they have been excellent chaps and unworthy to be shafted by a two-tier wage structure.

Hi 406,

Guys, so far this is advance info.

Moosp your point is VERY VALID INDEED.

The basic site is airindia.com. More passenger oriented - as can be expected - but watch this space for more info.

fish Salaries

8500 takes you quite far in India... But in UK it's really nothing to celebrate about.

A foreign pilot flying in India will have fixed expenses in the country he or she is from. So that 8500 has to support him/her in India as well as pay for stuff back home.

There are a lot better deals around than what Air India is offering. I am sure that someone will be happy to take the job for that money.

Rishworth - www.rishworth.co.nz has been trying to fill the positions for about a month or so. Lousy deal. Plus it's only short term until the AI crews are trained.

Better deals to be sure!!! Caution avoid Airborne Personnel

Guys,
Best would be to check with the local Air India office for reliable info. Will keep the board posted if I hear of anything.

Yes even though this would be a temp arrangement as the a/line sources put it, maybe for NRI's like 406 they make make an exception.

US$8,500 could be tough for someone not BASED out of India, but for pilots looking to keep the blue sky above and being shafted in terms of their current jobs, I guess the 18 month experience will keep the salt on the table for a while till they get a better job, while keeping their flying meters ticking.

As airlines go, I'm no great fan of Air India, per se, but I'm sure it is better than most of the tiny airlines cluttering up the skies that even SLF ( on Pprune's other pages ) keep cribbing about.

All in all, a subjective deal in my opinion. Maybe not an open career opportunity, but yes a great way to keep you in the air till something better comes along

And atleast the poor guys are pretty fair about the whole thing upfront .

Wonder how long before an official statement comes out denying all such rumours!

The delay may be due to

1 The pilot union not yet getting into the act (but do they have a union now ?- since IPG was literally shafted after their SAARS misadventure!)

2 The minister who most usually "denies" such moves with much fanfare and trumpeting is not doing so since he/she is busy occupied elsewhere and may not even be sure of the chair in a couple of months ( there is a general election just underway!)

I would not count too much on these speculations. While it is no doubt true that Air India is planning to add LAX soon (SFO is still a long way away although Air India has one of the largest booty of unutuilised fifth freedom rights), the fact is that the moment some one mentions "contract" in Air India, everyone starts jumping. As of now the only way foreign pilots are getting employment is when a new aircraft type is introduced and operators are allowed to bring in expats until the locals are fully trained (as has happened with the domestic operators - Jet Airways for their ATR72s Air Sahara for their CRJs).

Air India is using 747 400s and these aircraft have been with them for quite a long while now, way back from the early 1990s, and because of the stringent Indian laws and the bureaucratic hassle involved in getting permissions, Air India would find it easier to extend the contracts of their retiring pilots by a couple of years with prior DGCA( the Indian CAA) permission which is much easier to get and which I believe Air India is already doing in a limited scale currently.

Just to clarify, it's more than a rumor. Please see http://www.rishworth.co.nz/opportuni...ppid=604&cat=1 if you have any doubts. This is for Air India. You are either based in JFK or LHR.

Cheers!!
