As many of you have said,go-arounds (or should that rather be 'goings-around?) are a common occurrence at almost any airport.
Mostly, they're initiated by the flitecrew, for any number of reasons, ranging from percieved windshear,an unstable approach, inability to establish properly or to the crew's satisfaction, another aircraft still being on the active, another acft being too close ahead on finals (wake considerations),etc.
then there are go-arounds due to ATC messups like forgetting to give landing clearance, very late landing clearance etc.equally, there are 'advisory go-arounds' as i like to call them, where ATC suspectsthere might be debris/contamination on the runway and cannot therefore ensureas is their responsability,a perfectly safe runway.
i doubt, however, that the pilots would be under close scrutiny for performing a go-around,after all,we're constantly being trained to consider safety above all else,so if the situation warranted it,they'd have nothing to fear even if they were scrutinized.
Depending on the circumstances,it would rather be the Twr controller who would be under scrutiny.
And finally,i think that anyone who wants to ask about a go-around or any other incident should be welcomed. Its often through such questions that we all as a community of aviators and aviation-lovers get to hear about interesting occurrences.

More go around drivel.
Jet aborts landing drama
Probably the worst journalistic report....ever
And perhaps a near story

I was absolutely gobsmacked and my mouth went dry. The pilot of the BA flight and his passengers will no doubt have been given a real scare.

A tailwind had brought the aircraft into the airport quicker than expected.

He was told to go around to avoid any potential issues, which he did. He carried out a 90 degree turn.

The NATS spokesman said the incident had not been logged as a near-miss.

I heard an aircraft calling a go-around a couple of days ago at MAN. ATC later asked why the a/c had gone around and the reply was that the runway had been occupied. Probably someone taking a little longer than expected to cross 24R for 24L, which is often the case if its something large and heavy. Experienced it a few times myself.
Nothing sinister.
