Post “the crash earlier today in London”

While waiting for my delayed AMS-LHR flight this evening, I was startled to hear a tannoy announcement at the gate about the “crash earlier today in London”. This turned out not to be the air disaster over London that I initially feared, but just another ATC computer failure. I notice that the BA captain was careful not to use emotive words like “crash” in his announcements, but it would seem that airports are less inhibited. Would this happen at a British airport?
