UAL B777 Mayday
Within the last half hour a UAL B777 landed at Glasgow after a Mayday. Smoke in the cabin and an overweight landing. All seems to be fine.

I was intrigued by this other story: Emergency landing after fire alert
Specifically:
An Italian aircraft which was in the area at the time carried out an air-to-air inspection of the plane, but saw no sign of a fire.
How does an air-to-air inspection take place, particularly if the other plane was a commercial flight, with fuel/economy to bear in mind?
