One offspring regularly cycles past that way and says with bad timing the noise of take-off and landing can be physically painful.

Presumably, cycling on the adjacent Thames Path? This was built far more recently than was the heliport and is noticeably absent from the above photograph, when the heliport was within an industrial area.

That’s Bridges Court Road. The side of the heliport exposed to it is a stretch of less than 40 metres in length and a “short” cut that is actually a long cut! ;)

As a resident of the general area and very familiar with BHP, as others have said, in times gone by it was in the backend of a grubby industrial area with council estates and low income housing up until the late 80's when the yuppy exodus from Kensington and Chelsea forced by high property prices, caused downbeat areas to be 'invaded' by well heeled persons looking for a nice house a cab's distance from the action in town. Then of course came the flats and then more and more flats in low/high rise variants. Then in the 2000's investors from abroad built large blocks of luxury flats adjacent to BHP on both sides which exacerbated the reflected noise to the other side of the river rather like the WW2 'Sound Mirrors' in Denge, Kent. My spies tell me that the building that is shown in the above 1959 photo (building that is in skeletal form) will be the site for yet another building of luxury flats, that to my simple mind will perhaps cause hazardous airflow issues with helicopters with skids manoeuvring about the heliport and cause even more sound to be projected across the river to the other side and to the 'vexatious complainant'.
The simple fact is, that way too many grown ups rush into purchasing very expensive properties without due care, not bothering to look on maps to see possible vexations or spending time in the area beforehand to see what's what and what's not. I love helicopters, but I am wise enough to not want to live that close to a main heliport due to the noise. Ironically, the sink estates to the back of the heliport are minimally affected by the noise due to the blocking effect of the luxury flats! Back in the 90's a girlfriend lived in Chelsea Harbour and I have to say that it's charms when visiting soon wore off what with the heliport, approach into LHR commencing at 4.15am and of course the nuclear waste trains rumbling across the metal railway bridge in the middle of the night. |
Don't Blame Mr. Curtis
I don't blame Mr. Curtis for walking out of the meeting, people like Mr. Farrand get on my Goat!.
I use to have to deal with people who constantly complained about the aircraft coming and going out of the airport I use to work at; it's the same one as Mr. Curtis is the MD of. The problem is, people like Mr. Farrand forget (and already mentioned by so many), the heliport was there well before he was. If he does not like the noise he should sue his solicitor or whoever done the search on the property he purchased. It seems to me that this article in the "Spy" thinks it is only the very rich that use the heliport. As I use to point out the the people who complained about the airport, and it applies to Batts, it is used by Royalty, British and Foreign members of Government, Captains of industry who's companies add the the UK GDP and employ thousands of people within the UK and Worldwide, British and Foreign Military plus many many others. After pointing this out to them I then asked "With all that in mine, there's you, what chances do you think you would have getting it closed?" There was one lady who lived on extended centre line to the airport, a constant complainer, I invited her to come and meet us at the airport which she did. She was delightful and after being shown round and not realising what really happened at the airport become it's greatest fan... Bless her. |
