I've got a question for the 369E nuts, what was the deal with the small windows in front of the front doors? And also the horizontal fin on top of the doghouse? Was more curious about it than anything, don't often see it.
thanks |
500E Doghouse.
The prototype 500E had the sides of the nose glazing filled-in so maybe the small windows just forward of the doors were added to give a little extra forward vision.
The horizontal surface on top of the doghouse was a modification Hughes engineers came up with for the various military versions of the 500 fitted with mast-mounted sights. The mast-mounted sight was found to be creating turbulence over the tail area. The flat surface helped to reduce the tail buffeting. The OH-6D and 500 MD TOW/MMS helicopters were the first machines to get this modification. It appears the designers at Hughes decided to add it to the 500E because it looked good! There was no aerodynamic requirement for it. It isn't fitted to current production 500Es and 530FFs, 500 Fan. |
g jive is definately NOT marshall parkers.

Stringfellow,
If that isnt MPs then that paint scheme must be very very similar to his as I thought it was identical to that which he had on the 902 he used to own in San Diego. Ned |

hello ned!!!!
both g jive and mps machine have identical paint schemes a source of potential confusion!! as a 500 nut i can confirm i have seen both in the flesh and are indeed different aircraft. |
Kiwi 520Ns.
It is interesting to see the number of MD520N Notars growing in New Zealand. It seems the Kiwis still love the 500.
How is the Notar liked by veteran 500 pilots when compared with the 500D and E models? What kind of work is it used on, beside spraying? Is it doing everything the older 500s did or is the Notar system limiting it in any way? I guess you might be able to get a little closer to the deer with the 520N! Thanks. 500 Fan. |
