CHC Australia B412 Captains
 
Hi ppruners! Anyone got the scoop on what CHC are paying for their recently advertised B412 Captain positions in Essendon/Bankstown? - ballpark figure plus roster would be good.:ok:

Probably best to wait for the outcome of the current round of negotiations after the big NO vote from the pilots.

Sorry, not quite right, no internal applicants which is even weirder. Must be a reason, I thought the rural Captains would jump at the chance of getting a captial city base.

The real estate market may be coming down but capital city still means losing an arm and a leg to put a roof over the family. And the rat race/commute, why would you want to?

So how come these vacancies at Bankstown and Essendon (and now Mackay) have suddenly arisen?

I reckon the answer to your question is supply and demand. There are more jobs available now than there are QUALIFIED M/E IFR Captains. All the M/E IFR companies (CHC, Bristow, AHPL, Jayrow, HA) need qualified pilots. Also heard a rumour that Esso may need more captains within the year as well.
The company that has the most attractive terms and conditions will fill their requirements first.
I'd say Bristow are in the lead at the moment thanks to their pilots being united and focused.
All eyes now on CHC and Jayrow to see if their pilots show the same resolve. Me thinks they will.
The other companies will ignore the marketplace at their own peril.

Vacancies in Bankstown and Mackay due to guys moving on for better deals. Essenden is a new contract so more staff required.

Cost of living/ rat race main detractors. Start pay for Captain with CIR and ATPL 85 -90k . Roster 2 days, 2 nights 4 off(Syd) 24 hr roster in Mackay, not sure what will be in place in Essenden.

From the current EBA (yes, I googled) your figures are a bit light on.

If you arrive with a CIR and ATPL, chances are you will qualify to start with "year credits"...hence your starting salary will be higher, then you add the ATPL and CIR allowances on top of this. Brings a fully qualified CHC Captain up to around 100K as a true base salary.

Not quite mate! My mate is already a Captain with CHC and is moving to one of the newly advertised positions.

Regardless of the figures (and I do believe you are correct), $100K now IMHO opinion is so far off the mark, I'm surprised they got any applications to be honest. :{

Sydney is VERY expensive and if you're on $100K or similar, have a family, you're not living in Sydney - you're living in an outer suburb of Sydney with all of the drawbacks and few of the benefits. Given that, you might as well be living in one of the regional areas where the quality of life would be far greater.:)

I suspect that many of the EMS positions these days are taken up by ex-mil types with pensions to draw on to help supplement their pay. Once these guys dry up (the mil no longer offers pension plans on joining), it'll be interesting to see if the salaries remain as is.:hmm:

(take your point about quality of life though, aint Bankstown great??)

Isn't 100K less than what a Bristows FO (not SFO) with DTA grossed up gets paid?:eek:

85-90K is downright rude!!!!:ouch:

Apologies for being pedantic but I never said the regional areas were cheaper, only that the quality of life would be greater than perhaps living in an outer suburb of Sydney. By the way, my WA colleagues might take exception to you referring to Perth as a regional area (whilst others might consider it remote).;)

You make a very good point (almost). A first year FO with BHA from Sep will be on $94,474 (approx). He'll be an FO for 1 to 2 years and then he'll be promoted and on $135,148 (approx). Note all DTAs have been grossed up. After another 2 to 3 years, that's when the big bucks start rolling in...

I might add though, trying to compare the two jobs (apart from a salary perspective) is like comparing apples with pears. My personal view is that EMS pilots should be paid far more than off-shore guys purely from a skills perspective, but never will be because their clients won't pay and the positions have so far been filled by people willing to work for the conditions on offer.

It will be very interesting to see how CHC will resolve this particular dilemma given 60% (approx) of their Aust work force is from the EMS / Ambo side with the remaining in the off-shore sector. The BHA pilots have conversely ensured their off-shore guys will never be compromised by any possible future EMS work by making their EBA an off-shore EBA only.

How has the recruitment progressed for the Melbourne based positions...and when does this contract actually begin? And while on topic has anyone the goss as to whether CHC as the encumbant contractor in Melbourne will automatically pick up the Warnambool gig and has there been a start date announced? Interesting in where these pilots will come from (are coming from) and how Companies involved in the EMS world are addressing the shortage of qualified drivers!

I have been told CHC have filled the Essendon positions.

Last I heard, CHC were commencing the contract in Essendon in October this year with the Warnambool helicopter due sometime next year.... I imagine the Warnambool gig would have to go to tender (may be wrong) as it wasn't part of the original tender for HEMS aircraft in Vic.

A betting man would go with a CHC B412 for that one as well. ;)
