Why does UK-CAA require more IFR flying than JAR ???

JAR Requirements:
5 hrs VFR - 10 hrs IFR - Combined VFR/IFR Skill test
Price: Euro 26.500
Price including all airport taxes, fuel and skill test fee (Danish CAA)

UK CAA Requirements:
8 hrs VFR - 15 hrs IFR - Combined VFR/IFR Skill test (Danish CAA Examinor accepted)
Price: Euro 36.700
Price including all airport taxes, fuel and skill test fee (Danish CAA)

We are talking more than 10K difference. Thought the JAR requirements where the same both in Denmark and UK ?????

Don't know about the rest of JAA land, but the 8 hours is for a first twin type rating. Perhaps this is a CAA only requirement?

Ha ha - if it wasn't because I now live in the other end of Denmark (Zealand), I would love to and probably do a bit freelance work in the park as well. Worked there in my sparetime during my ATPL studies, great place ..
Imagine getting paid for acting like a kid, that was quite fun - great parties as well - spook the kids and girls in the dark basement of the Castle, he he :p ..
Best thing was to get a big grown up man to scream like a girl when spooked - HA HA :ok: ..

When summer gets closer, go on Thursday nights - that is usually western nights, park later open and a lot of beer could be consumed :} ..
Good food? - Go to the restaurant in the Castle - good stuff ..

Other than Legoland, nothing much else happens in Billund where BAC is -very sleepy town ..

I was being slightly sarcastic as I meant the IR at BAC, but seeing as Billund is known for Legoland more than anything else ...

Oh I know you meant BAC saying 'Legoland' - but I bet you will see find yourself in Legoland, because nothing much else happens in that veeeery sleepy little town of Billund ..
Billund has two things. A larger airport and Legoland. That's it !!

IR Training
 

Want to know has anyone done their IR training with Tiger Helicopters, in Shobdon. The highs and lows :eek:

my company has taken on a lot of guys with new IR's in the last couple of years and consistently I hear that they are are getting good training at Bristows and Helicopter Services.

I dont know much about Tiger, if I were you I would want to know who the instructor was and check their reputation

I personally went to Helicopter Services along with a few of my mates and we were all really impressed. John Daly went well above the call of duty and they have a good team there. Don't just look in the UK, Europe has some good IR training schools too and they can be slightly cheaper.

Tiger haven't been doing IR(H) for long as far as I am aware, so can't tell you much.

Ask what the school's pass rate is. Last time I heard, which was a year or so ago, HSL was 100%, more or less. The others I don't know.

There's price, and then there's quality. And Leon might be a bit grumpy to start with but he's funny and good.

Leon and co = top bunch.
My IR course with them was first class and I walked straight into employment post course :ok:

Aside from pass rates,perhaps another question to ask would be why do some schools have long waiting lists, and others not :uhoh:

Disapointed with the quality, don't expect a good level of customer service...:hmm:

I have done some training with Tiger and I have to say they were very good.

They have only offered the IR course for a short time but I believe that the course is well laid out and prepares you well for the test.
They appear to have good links with N Sea operators and I have heard of several graduates getting employment in ABZ.

Like every company there are the good and bad points. If you are local pay them a visit, they would be more than happy to show you around.

Who ever you choose, good luck with the training. It can be hard work but is very rewarding.

Helicopter Services, Wycombe Air Park
PAS, Gloucester
Bond, Gloucester


'New' IR Providers:

Tiger Helicopters, Shobden
Fast Helicopters, Thruxton
Severn Aviation, Gloucester


The other 'established' schools will probably be just as busy as Bristows. You will probably be able to get a place sooner at one of the newer schools but I would personally be very wary of spending £20k+ without a decent track record.

Gloucester seems to be emerging as a UK 'hub' for training then? Tiger's A109 has been ther a lot lately too...

Helipilot1982, were you the first one through the IR course at Fast? Did they give you a 'discount' for being the first guinea pig?

I suppose they have to get good results over a period of time to be taken seriously, although I don't doubt the skills of some of their instructors. Personally i'd be wary of parting with approx 30k with someone new to the IR training industry.
