May I ask what the devices are inboard of each Master Caution panel, in front of both pilot positions; it looks like a light but most likely not. ???
IHL -

Those are small video cameras. They help greatly in engine software development tests when you're trying catch transient wierdness. We have four of these very small cameras that we can put anywhere, inside or out. Recorded to a harddisk for later viewing.

Gentlemen,

these pictures may be every day work to you guys, but what good shots! along with the short explanations they really do show the varied work that is acheived by using Helicopters.

Phil K , one of your shots show what looks like steam or smoke, what is happening in that picture?

Many regards to all of you.

Great pictures guys. :ok:

Please add a few words to your pics - if only helicopter type and location.

I regularly get e-mails/PMs asking me to get people to do that - it adds to the interest.

Keep 'em coming.

Was going through my slides and have picked out a few various ones to post, as well as some info on where they are.

Bell 206L being used as an air attack ship on the Canberra fires. Note the fire reflection on the front.

http://www.heliopsmag.com/pictures/nev2.jpg

This was taken holding the camera outside the 206L facing backwards as we were low level through the smoke heading to find a dozer driver who was supposed to be cutting a fire break.

http://www.heliopsmag.com/pictures/nev3.jpg

This is the forward facing shot, gives a unique effect don’t you think.

http://www.heliopsmag.com/pictures/nev4.jpg

Another forward facing shot, this time in a landscape format.

http://www.heliopsmag.com/pictures/nev5.jpg

This is one of the Bell 204s being flown by Tim Turner during the Canberra fires. I think about two houses were saved in this suburb, and it obviously wasn’t these ones.

http://www.heliopsmag.com/pictures/nev6.jpg

This one was shot 120 miles out into the Tasman Sea. Shows Hamilton Island Aviations Bell 430 sitting atop one of the big ships that comes in through the reef. For info I was shooting from a 206L.

http://www.heliopsmag.com/pictures/nev7.jpg

Same location and shot from the other end. As you can see they are quite a decent size.

http://www.heliopsmag.com/pictures/nev8.jpg

Just an artsy shot of a 407 tailrotor. This was Hawker Pacific’s demo machine that was visiting Hamilton Island at the time of my visit.

http://www.heliopsmag.com/pictures/nev9.jpg

Playing around with various framing techniques and liked this one of two Bell 206s framed by the 407 tail.

http://www.heliopsmag.com/pictures/nev10.jpg

These are two of the eight EC130s operating in New Zealand. These two were shot over Auckland harbour. Always fun shooting into the suns reflection on the water, gives you some cool results.

I have seen a small number of Kamov and Mils in various places and lots of photos and they all had cabin and dashboard painted in a sort of pale blue-green colour.

Most western helicopters have either matt black or grey (presumably to decrease the reflected glare off surfaces).

Why the blue-green colour? Is it just that Mil and Kamov bought up big when blue -green paint was cheap?

Does it make any difference when you fly with glare etc?

The Crane was the last of Igor's personal babies. It was the direct outcome of the S-60 experiments that were done with the piston H-37 drive train.
Here is Igor and his engineering team out for a quick flight underneath the first crane.
Never mind computer designed, here you have a real case of putting your faith on the line!:

On that S-60 flight, the pilot was Jack Peterson, and his co-pilot was Jim Kay.
After takeoff, Jim checked to see if the platform was behaving itself, as he glanced back to look, he said to Pete, "Pete, don't do anything sudden!"
"What's wrong, is the load swinging?", Pete asked.
"Nope, worse. The Old Man is up and walking around!"

Igor had undone his belt and began strolling around the tiny platform, oblivious to the fact that there was no railing, or that they were 1500 feet above the ground! After much strenuous gesturing, Igor got the hint and sat back down!
