Just watched you on TV! This was "Aircrash Investigation", about the incident where Robert Pique successfully glided a fuel starved A330 from mid-atlantic to Lajores airport (Azores). You gave an extremely informed interview about the mode of failure of the fuel line in the Rolls-Royce engine. My favourite bit was admiring all the models in the background - especially that Sea-King helicopter! I enjoy your technical accounts of rotor-dynamics, especially the explanation of R22 18deg d3 angle (rotor cone and transverse flow compensation). I'm betting you trim this adverse effect on the human condition into full control too. Mart |

Today I'm writing you with sadness in my heart, F....Sydney is winning the battle:( Friday the 8th of july, me father specialist has come into the room to tell my parents that the cancer is still there . In is great serenity, Lu is calme and accept the fact that he has only a few months . :{ Knowing my father, I know he would like to speak to all of his friends so when he will be back home,because he wants to go back home, i will write to you his phone # if anybody would like to talk to him it will make him so happy.He has great respect for all of you on Prune. Your father has had such a wonderful and adventurous life. Please tell him that his friends who gather at pprune from around the world admire and respect him. He has such great spirit, we know that if anyone can beat this thing, he can. Please be sure to give him our warmest regards. And for you, who also has so much to bear, please also take care of yourself. I lost my parents a few years back, but the final months were warm and actually good ones, as I got to see a strength and resilience in them that made proud all over again. Lu shared his amazing life experience with us all and I am sure we are the better for it. His wealth of knowledge and experience allowed him to add to any discussion and I know we all delighted in the challenging debate. We look forward to hearing from him soon. I cant tell you how much this news sadden's me. I lost my father in law about 2 years ago just as I was realy getting to know him better, I had been with my girlfriend 2 years at this point so Id known him for 2 years. I live in a foriegn country to my birth place so when I met my girlfriend I always felt he welcombed me into his family, Which ment so much to me. We only found out he had cancer 2 months before he died so it came as a real shock to us all. I would like to wish you and your family all the luck in the world. Sad to hear, but don't give up because there's always hope. To me it seems that Lu Zuckerman is a tough one and hard to beat and you may just as well expect him to shake this off very soon. It certainly feels very strange to read through these posts about your father, who is a complete stranger to me, and be so moved by it but it surely touches a string in my heart. I can relate to your feelings since I have walked the same steps with my father a few years back. Now I believe is the time to say all the little things you have always wanted to tell your father. Please give him my best regards and tell him that I, and many others, are looking forward reading his posts again. A little prayer for you from Iceland, Karl. |

A somber time for Lu's family, our Industry and Pprune itself.
Despite the small size of our Industry, I can't remember meeting Lu, but may have seen him from time to time. Can someone post a photo of Lu so we can all see the man as he was in his favorite era; working with helicopters. |

Well Lu, to a know-nothing UK PPL(H) R22 and Hang Glider pilot your posts with their flawless grammar, immaculate spelling and technical brilliance are and always will be an inspiration. An inspiration to find out more, to realize how much there is to know and a reminder that there are professionals and there are others.
But also that there is a rarer individual who is prepared to impart their knowledge to others, argue their corner with civility and contribute to the humour of a situation in an infectious manner. Now, most of the guys in our HG club have some ‘graphics’ on their gliders. So, Lu, you rare individual, you are coming aboard my Hang Glider. A couple of guys from the Club helped get some small and distinctive lettering sorted today and by tomorrow my Solar Wings Scandal’s going to have your name out on the port leading edge. I reckon from there you will be able to see the action and offer some advice now and again. It’s a great glider Lu. I know you are going to like it. It has ‘ports’ in the leading edges to stiffen up the wing at speed and relax it for landings. It has variable geometry via an in-flight tensioning device to pull the wings forward. It has .. well, its has lots of things Lu. Now, most of our flying will be over the hills and valleys of East Shropshire in the UK. You will like it there Lu. Especially in the evening lift when it is smooth and buoyant – you can hear pots being rattled in the cottages below, you can lookout to the purple Welsh mountains and dive on unsuspecting hawks. It’s at times like that you look up at the wing and wonder who made this stuff possible. That’s why your name is there Lu. When folks ask me what that name is out on the port leading edge I shall tell them Lu and I will tell them why. We will then stand on the edge of the hill and launch ourselves into the creamy evening lift. |

Sorry to hear the battle is not going Lu's way, I can imagine how hard that is for all of you. Our thoughts are with you. If Lu wants to talk with all his friends out here, can I suggest you try downloading 'Skype'. It's a free program that (assuming he has broadband and a microphone) would enable him to chat round the world for free. The main advantage is that he could decide when he wants to be available and we can see when he is online. Just a thought. TeeS |

I'm so sorry to hear about Lu. He's been a great contributor here at PPrune and he would be sorely missed. I lost my father to cancer last year and I miss him and think of him often. He fought the illness for 13 years, then finally came to peace with it. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Lu and the rest of the family. Lu is well respected here by many (including me), and he's helped many with his experience, his insight, and his wise contributions. I've exchanged a few e-mails with him, and I enjoyed the exchanges very much. Please stay in touch. I and many others I'm sure, would like to know how things are going. Please give Lu our very best. I am very sorry to hear this. I will genuinely miss Lu's input to this forum and the others he frequented. He was a very entertaining and interesting participant in any debate he entered. He had a long and varied career and was knowledgeable and opinionated on any and every topic. My thoughts are with you and your family. |

I was lucky to have exchanged one email with Lu. Even though I wrote him for simple advice, he took the time to write a thorough, clear response, even though it would have been easy just to brush it off.
I have read his discussions and views for quite a while, and as entertaining as they were, they always left me thinking and with more knowledge than I started with. Thank you Lu. Thank for you teaching me to ask questions and delve deeper. God Bless. |
Lu was proud of his service in the United States Coast Guard....where he did some very interesting flying.

I'm surprised how hard that's hit me - I've never spoken to him, I exchanged a couple of e-mails a few years ago and I've read his posts and his defence of his posts over the years. Yet hearing of his passing has deeply saddened me. Shows how close you can get to someone, even just reading his views on a forum. Lu always expressed his opinions with certainty, vigour and humour, rarely descending to the level of the personal attacks that he was sometimes subjected to. He stuck to his guns and defended his position; whether that position was right or wrong was and will be a subject of eternal debate here. But in stimulating the debate and in fighting his corner, Lu caused a lot of people to think. And in that way he has certainly left his mark on our little community. Although I never met Lu, I shall miss him. My deepest condolences to Lu's wife and family. I'm extremely sorry to hear this very sad news. Having lost my mother three years ago in similar circumstances, my heart goes out to his family. God bless, Lu. Very sad to hear. When I started my new job working with Sea Kings Lu sent me , quite out of the blue , a model that I keep on my desk . Every day I will be reminded of his kindness and the knowledge that he shared with all of us on this forum. My condolences to his family. I too am deeply saddened by Lu's passing, Robbo Jock I find myself in the same position as you and I am very surprised at how I feel right now. RIP Lu and my sincerest condolences to all his family. V. I spoke to Lu on Thursday (for the first time), and he was as spry and witty as he ever appeared to us on pprune. I, too, am very sad, and will miss him very much. We spoke of the pioneers that he knew and flew with, who were legends by the time I came along, and he laughed and joked about our wrangles. He was one of a kind. Our screwball world of vertical flight is now quite a bit duller, and a lot less knowledgable with Lu's loss. Lyne, please pass on to your family the condolences of the hundreds of ppruners who respected your father so much. I can't believe it. I spoke to Mr Zuckerman only a couple of days ago (contact details were included on another thread). I know he's referred to as 'Lu' on threads here but 'Mr Zuckerman' seemed more fitting (for one thing, he knew a lot more than I do). The strange thing was, he sounded younger when I talked to him than he did when I read his posts. My condolences to his family and friends - many of whom live here. Steve A sad day indeed. I can't say I always understood his arguments, but someone who challenges engineering design with the experience, education and conviction of Lu deserves to be remembered for ever more. People like Lu are few and far between. They are the reason that designers and engineers get things right in the end. The helicopter world (not to mention Pprune) will be a poorer place without him.
