iPad only apps

Can anyone recommend any apps for the Ipad that are really helpful for flying.

I have seen memory map which is incredible, and whilst not a replacement for a paper chart it could well be for a dash mount GPS.

And Aeroweather looks quite good with the Ipad edition for those poor weather days!

Air nav looks very good - starting to think its a good job I haven't splashed out on a Garmin... The Ipad should be just as good!

Wing-X
Foreflight
LogTen Pro

Have not tried the Jepp App though it is being hailed as an FAA approved replacement for paper charts in the f/w world.

The Jepp app is great - it's the way ahead for us!

tarting to think its a good job I haven't splashed out on a Garmin
..... I Concur . I recently flew to the Alps and back, first time deeper into France than L2K. The situational awareness that the iPad provides is far superior to the other nav aids I had in the heli (Skymap IIIc, Garmin 695, Garming 430), the only one I used was the iPad.

Air Nav Pro - excellent, especially if you buy the local charts within the app and take the time to load in the airport plates (very easy in france thanks to the SIA Civile publishing them freely in a useful format).

Memory map - useful moving map backup, quicker and arguably more robust than Air nav pro as it's not really computing anything, but very limited in application other than confirming where you are (no useful direct to command, or leg planning), also the map only shows north UP which I find a little irritating

NOTAMs HD - quick and useful, shows notams on a map too :ok:

I have used Airnav Pro and don't like it - there's a lot of room for improvement in terms of user-friendliness and speed. It's damn slow, at least on iPad 1.

Foreflight is better, but it only has charts for the US. I'd love to see a european version. My only caveat is map-scaling. On a paper chart the scale is obviously fixed and you can tell in a glance how far you are from eg. a city, airport etc. On the Ipad you can zoom the map in an out as you like, but there's no reference scale and you can't tell how many miles/klicks one 1nch on the screen represents. Minor thing, but IMHO it renders the VFR charts useless for pilotage/dead reckoning. But a good app after all, if not a bit too expensive.

Logten Pro is a good logbook, but again: I need two separate logs (one for planks, another for helis and actually a third one for gliders) - this can't be done on the iPad version (the PC version supports multiple logs). Also, printing your flights doesn't work too well. But again, not a bad app.

Another one I use is iBal - a special app designed for helicopter W&B calculations. No squawks here, it's worth the 7€ it cost.

Have used also some other apps but they weren't too good. Generally there's quite lot of aviation-related stuff in the App Store, but most is worthless...

Cheers!

P.S. Try Good Reader. Not exactly an aviation app, but it's great for downloading/storing/reading pdf files. I have all my manuals there and love it. Also used it for displaying approach charts and it worked well...

I agree it can be slow on start, and if you try to scale/scroll the map whilst flying (typically taking 2-3 seconds with my setup, but depends on how much database info you are asking it to overlay), but i still found i don't do this a great deal in flight and that it's very usable, thats why memory map is a good backup as it's less useful but faster as a simple moving map. I too am using the iPad1 and i think on the new iPad 2 it would be less irritating. Still a useful app IMO

iBooks (native apple program) is also good for manuals, plates, lasors, ops manuals etc... and it gives you the advantage of being able to view/arrange your docs in iTunes as well as on the iPad, which you may or may not like...

HeliChopter 3rd May 2011 11:47

Don't forget PilotWizz Pro. It can live on either your iPhone or iPad. Probably more use on the iPhone. Great for getting TAFs and METARs on the run and a very nifty W&B calculation app. With the ability to store data on all your regularly used aircraft it means you can do W&B with one hand and have the fuel nozzle in the other!

Also use Air Nav, Memory Map and Logten Pro on a regular basis although once again I find Logten most useful on the iPhone.

Air Nav Pro

Downloaded Air Nav Pro on my i phone 4 today, fantastic, what I liked is that you can place the i phone on your chart (mine has a incase cover which stops it moving around) and follow your track line whilst using the app to verify your Track, Altitude, Ground Speed etc.

I havn't downloaded the 1.5 charts yet as the free Open Street Map is brilliant with the Airspace showing layered over it, not quite as quick as the Garmin Skymap but if your going somewhere and you use a chart with your track plotted on it together with a Skymap and then your i phone with this app loaded it would almost be imposible to get lost. It is most probably great on an i pad, but would be to big to place the i pad on your chart.

Only problem is that it chews your battery so take your power lead !

Capt Hollywood 6th May 2011 08:04

If you're in Australia the OzRunways app is great.

g-mady 6th May 2011 10:38

All we need now are step down transformers, 12v sockets and Iphone/Ipad chargers in the aircraft....

If I start up memory map on the iphone 3GS it would probably kill the battery in an hour!

Myradar is great in the U.S. I love you can look at the radar for your entire flight.
FltPlan, you can save all of your info, for multiple aircraft.

I use it every day in iPad 2, even for off shore distance vessel calculations, I'm very happy, with it, as well Jeppesen TC program, :ok:

g-mady 8th May 2011 10:26

No use to aviation (except for hotel stops) but the new planetary app looks very good!
Brilliant use of the Ipad,

Another handy one is invoices to go... if you need that sort of thing

I once saw someone use an app that had the 3 letter airport codes, 4 letter ICAO codes, runway lengths, etc. Great for commercial airline work i.e. checking out what airport to divert to during an inflight emergency. What is the name of that app?

Outwest 17th May 2011 01:13

Has anyone found a Nav log app? Something to create bearing /distance/time/payload/fuel, etc and be able to use it in flight for Start/up/down/shutdown/payload, etc tracking?

iPad 2

I have just tried the iPad 2 over a 4 hour flight and it preformed well. Using Oz runways by R Wilson and Air Nav Pro with WAC charts loaded. It was fast enough to render the WAC in zoom while conducting low level turns and no lag was detected. The render did jerk to some degree while zoomed out to about 1:1 WAC scale though nothing that would put me off. It was very good in most cases of zoom and render times were good. Air Nav Pro dose not have any RAIM warnings and the data base overlay is not verified to any standard to be reliable for sole navigation. If you use it for reference only to the WAC the position rendered was spot on the the Helicopters position.

As far as Oz runways. Awesome DAP rendering and very nice to use for an EFB for approach plates. The top menu buttons are a bit small for fat fingered heli pilots when in flight. Other than that bring on the Oz runways full EFB with moving maps and Enrout charts. Is is the future and the iPad is by far the best option, bang for buck out there.

Jarvy 20th May 2011 14:03

I know the title says I-pad but has anyone used any other tablet for navigation in a helicopter?
As for the I-pad 3 was told by an apple guy that it will most likely be called the I-pad pro so as not to upset the people who have just bought the 2.

I was told Air Nav (VFR?) would not run on iPad (by the Air Nav people). Am I confusing Apps/Programs.

infloweffect 22nd May 2011 12:53

Air nav pro works gr8 on the iPad 2. (VFR). Hmmm I would not be using it other than for a ref on the moving map. Def not an IFR app. It is fun and has plenty of features and would be ok for the part time aviator to help with map reading or overlays of danger areas and CTR boundarys but the data base is not (-at this stage) at any level of accuracy. It's more like a good tool to use for situational awareness or in x-plane for an up coming IRT. This allows you to fly and use the iPad to display the moving map. I found the WAC charts to be awesome and the zoom very clear. The charts did take some time to download and were expensive. Oz runways will be the iPad revolution when v2.0 comes out with WAC VNC En low etc. Awesome and cheap and updated with some good fail safe features applied so u can't use old charts. If you have an iPhone It can be used as a back up. I would still carry all the charts and plates IFR until CASA deam it satisfactory. I mean really u can loose a chart just as easily as having a flat battery or other electronic failure.

That lights normal! 22nd May 2011 22:59

We were talking about compleatly different things.

"Air Nav VFR" is a computer based program. Flight planning/maps (up to date, Air Services Australia maps).
Looks fantastic (and is according to many that use it) - I got all excited thinking it now might be available for iPad.

Oz runways are apparently adding maps in June.

Thanks for the reply.

Does anyone know if the ipad 2 with ForeFlight will show the weather radar at 1000'-2000'. I guess I'm asking if it looses signal strength with altitude.
Thanks!

Ok Guys,

I am trying to understand whether I can use the IPad 2 in place of a Garmin 430? or any other GPS (North America/Alaska). What program will give me a moving map with terrain overlay (National Geo). Do I need an external antenna.

Thanks for your time

birrddog 2nd Jun 2011 21:05

Not sure about iPad II, but on iPad I, you need the 3G version for GPS. (built in antennae)

Foreflight HD or WingX Pro give you moving map (I have both), plus Wx, airport directory, flight planning, etc. etc.

There are a few iPad Kneeboard mounts available, though I'd be careful about relying on it as sole source of navigation for a few reasons, one being impact of light and sunglasses on visibility.

I've used it on two flights as a secondary source and it was useful, though both were two pilot situations so I did not have to worry about fiddling with the iPad and the controls at the same time.

IPad 2

Thanks for the info Birrddog.
It seems that the 3g or 4g version has the built in antenna.

I noticed that Wing had a moving map overlay for the approach plate, does Foreflight also offer this application?

If you only had the option of keeping one application which would it be?

Again I appreciate your help

birrddog 3rd Jun 2011 19:57

Tough call as I like both.

For Flight planning I prefer Foreflight, and it works well on iPhone too.

WingX is good inflight and I like the different views you can create (multiple sections on the screen with different info, and quick switching between customized views).

EN48 has used these "in anger" more than I and mentioned he preferred WingX.

If it won't break the bank I'd say try both as your personal preferences might be different.

ForeFlight used to offer a 30day free trial; can't recall if WingX does as well.

g-mady 4th Jun 2011 07:34

You can use the wifi only iPad for moving map but you will need to by the Bluetooth GPS to go with it.

This is not a bad option even for people with the 3G version as you can leave the antenna where it can get a good signal for example outside the cabin on a boat and still use the iPad inside.

I have been looking for an app that turns the iPhone into a Bluetooth gps antenna and there doesn't really seem to be one. Hopefully it's only a matter of time but it might be a limitation of the Bluetooth/iPhone.

Update

Thanks guys for all the help.

I decided to venture into the world of Mac for the first time and got the IPad 2 with 3g, WingX and the approach plate moving map overlay. I may try the Jepp plates but will wait a bit until I can find my way around the Ipad better.
From my initial fumbling I can see why people like the Ipad.
Again thanks for the imput.

Just bought the iPad2.
Using Air Nav Pro and Fore Flight, great for weather and pre flight info. The GPS on both work fine in the air.
AviMap Gps is a good way of getting free sectional chart coverage in the US.
Wundermap & Radar US are also good for weather radars.

Tried EFB (Electronic flight bag) seemed to be working well and better than Fore Flight, XWing and Air Nav Pro. It locked up my iPad, and blocked all Email's. Everything turned to normal after I deleted it. Could be a coincidence.

More Questions

On the wingx pro 7 on Ipad2 I seem to have lost my night mode. Unlike early models it dosent seem to be on the brightness mode button.

Also ADS-B is activated but can seem to get a green on any of the modes ie Heart Beat,GPS loc,GPS Alt,FIS_B Data

Any suggestons?

birrddog 12th Jun 2011 18:40

Just purchased AirNav Pro for some flight planning for a proposed flight next week in England.

My observances
A) Expensive
B) Maps are incredibly expensive
C) not very intuitive, either in flight planning, browsing or inflight modes.

Maybe I'm missing something, thoughgh so far I feel a little disgruntled.

Any in sites/positive experiences with this product?
