Dennis crashes

News is that Dennis crashed in Lehi

here

[email protected] 14th Jun 2008 05:56

So it can even happen to the very best - a solemn warning to anyone who wants to just go and give it a go because helicopter aerobatics look cool.

Glad you are OK Dennis - aeros are nice, just need to work on the landings:)

Gordy 14th Jun 2008 06:15

"Glad you are OK Dennis - aeros are nice, just need to work on the landings"

AND--welcome to mountain flying--not the ones in the UK--they don't count..

griffothefog 14th Jun 2008 06:19

More chips on the CIA's fire... The campaign Against Aviation goes from strength to strength :{
No one over 6 will be allowed to levitate soon :=

Hard luck Dennis, glad your OK. That display really takes your breath away :ok:

jellycopter 14th Jun 2008 06:41

Good luck Dennis. After 1000s of hours everyones luck runs out sometime as i know only too well myself. JJ

Senior Pilot 14th Jun 2008 06:48

Dennis,

Sorry to hear of your mishap: hopefully you will get straight back "in the saddle" and be just that touch older and wiser for the experience ;)

Glad that you're not seriously hurt :ok:

Flying Lawyer 14th Jun 2008 07:09

Bad luck Dennis - but pleased you're OK which is what really matters. :ok:

Look forward to seeing you displaying again soon.

Cheers

ShyTorque 14th Jun 2008 07:40

Dennis - Oops!

The TV lady said it though: "The show must go on". :)

VfrpilotPB/2 14th Jun 2008 08:38

Wow! that could have hurt, but one of my alltime hero's is still able to shoulder the blame, .. What a man!

I 'm sure gravity had a hand in that.

finalchecksplease 14th Jun 2008 08:45

Glad to hear you walked away from it ok Dennis :ok:

Did the reporter say you are a champion acrobatic pilot, does that mean you also do some acrobatic moves inside the cockpit while you are flying your aerobatics manoeuvres?

Greetings,

Finalchecksplease

FLY 7 14th Jun 2008 10:20

Thank goodness Dennis is fine.

A tribute to the strength and safety of the 300 though.

I was only reading in 'Pilot' last night that the compression spring dampers in the skid design, and energy absorbing structure beneath the seats, make the 300 much safer in a heavy/crash landing scenario, and has prevented a lot of serious injuries..

jammydonut 14th Jun 2008 10:36

Norma Stitz 14th Jun 2008 10:46

Echoing the sentiments - gald you are safe DK!

From a former passenger

Ioan 14th Jun 2008 10:58

Glad you're OK Dennis :ok:

Overdrive 14th Jun 2008 11:20

Holy sh*t! Fate having a last try after not getting a look in for 56 years. But, now you really have done it all Dennis...

Tough guy! That was a hard impact. Luckily, the best seem to survive the mishaps more often too, and walk away :ok:

Aser 14th Jun 2008 11:51

I'm glad you are ok fellow ppruner!

Best regards
Aser

Troglodita 14th Jun 2008 14:38

Glad you're OK Dennis.

I'll always remember how we looked forward to your Check Rides on our 300C and 206's at Lakeside in the 80's - we always learned lots from you, but you never showed us that manoevre!

Buitenzorg 14th Jun 2008 15:12

Glad you're OK, Dennis.

That's all that matters.

ppheli 14th Jun 2008 15:54

I still remember your rather-quick-but-perfectly-executed run-on landing on the grass at the Castle Ashby champs all those years ago after you had the TR problem in the Enstrom Shark.

Just like then, great to see you get out OK of this one.

There's another report on the KSL tv station too - check here

Hilico 14th Jun 2008 16:01

How hot and high is it in Yootaw?

malabo 14th Jun 2008 16:33

Lake elevation is around 4500'. Elevation where he was performing is probably a little higher than that. Daytime temps in the 32-33C range.

I thought the same looking at the video clip: never got fast enough on his low pass, pull up from too low an altitude (about 50') to do a loop, never got enough altitude, completed the flip at the top and then didn't have enough altitude, power, or speed to arrest the descent. A little surprised that someone with Kenyon's airshow experience would have got caught like that. Though the obits are full of good airshow pilots that got caught out. They interviewed him at the end of the video after the crash, so he's thankfully OK, though naturally disappointed. I think at sea level and cooler temp when the 300 isn't running like its got a flat cylinder he wouldn't have had a problem. Too bad.

I'd be just a tad concerned about lending out a heliocopter for manouvers that could compromise a C of A renewal. Not a problem anymore in this case, instead the owner who has to convince the insurance company to buy his helicopter.

Glad to see you are ok Dennis, take it easy buddy, regards Tim

Keep at it Dennis.....we all admire your flying!

Glad you are OK Dennis... hope to see you back in the saddle soon though!

JimL 15th Jun 2008 14:05

Nice to see that you survived this Dennis (looked quite unpleasant); it would be good to hear your view on why this happened.

Jim

Helipilot1982 15th Jun 2008 14:45

Glad your ok Dennis - perhaps you could educate us all to what actually happend from your point of view.

It just shows that no matter how experienced you are - you never stop learning up there!

rotorrookie 15th Jun 2008 21:17

Wow! after seeing the video it is remarkable that Dennis walked out ok, and yet another testimony about how strong airframe the 300 really is.
D.K. hope this will not stop you from keep going on with your great display.

gyromike 16th Jun 2008 01:20

The whole routine can be seen here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwZILBd-mNI

It's only a couple minutes long.

ChopperFAN 16th Jun 2008 07:37

Sgtfrog 16th Jun 2008 08:13

Glad you are Ok.

Snarlie 16th Jun 2008 11:09

What about the 46 hour PPL who seeks to emulate the venerable Denis and kills himself in the process. Surely it is time for someone from the Palace of Those Who Must Be Obeyed to breathe gently in Denis`s ear to cool it and do something within the aircraft`s flight manual limitations for a change.

Flying Binghi 16th Jun 2008 11:16

Go away Snarlie

Lost Again 16th Jun 2008 11:23

Emulating Dennis

Snarlie - Does that mean we need to get rid of the Red Arrows and all the other display teams.

Dennis has a skill that he has displayed for many years - any low hour PPl who is tempted to copy Dennis is probably dead already from checking if a mains cable is live by touching it or getting into a Lions cage to see if it is hungry.

R

treadigraph 16th Jun 2008 12:29

Dannis, any landing you walk away from... so very glad you are OK.

Snarlie, any crazy flying act - indeed any act at all - at an airshow is open to copying by the undisciplined and inexperienced (and terminally stupid) - so, hey, let's just ban airshows, eh?

Snarlie 16th Jun 2008 15:04

You will find that the Red Arrows along with most other professional display teams operate their aircraft within the operating limitations of their aircraft. Since when has the 300 been cleared for inverted aerobatic manoeuvres at low level.

Ewan Whosearmy 16th Jun 2008 16:08

Snarlie

AFAIK, Dennis is fully certified by the appropriate bodies to perform the displays that he does.

If you don't like that then fine, but this thread is not the best one to make your thoughts known on the matter - start a new one if you want some discussion on the issue.

BlenderPilot 16th Jun 2008 17:26

Snarlie, that wasn't a smart thing to say.

It wasn't the flying outside limitations that got him, it was a manuver miscalculation, and that can happen to anybody even when flying within limitations.

I'm glad he's ok, and if he ever reads it, he has to know he's got a Fan Club in Mexico.

PEASACAKE 16th Jun 2008 17:32

So..............is the aerobatic manoeuvre within the flight manual limitation as Snarlie asks.
