A teen has been charged after a police helicopter was targeted with a l@zer on a flight over Sydney's northwest, authorities say.

The helicopter was flying over Bella Vista at about 500 metres at 6pm (AEST) on Wednesday when its crew was allegedly targeted with a green l@zer beam.

The crew discovered the l@zer was being shone from the yard of a house in Eastbourne Way and landed the chopper nearby, police said.

A 19-year-old man was arrested at the house, with police allegedly seizing a green l@zer device.

He was taken to Castle Hill Police Station where he was interviewed and later charged with interfering with a crew member while in an aircraft.

He was given bail and is due to appear at Hornsby Local Court on July 22.

Although the officers were uninjured they were momentarily disorientated by the incident, police said.

Police are urging anyone who sees l@zers being shone at aircraft and vehicles to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Aren't the police helicopters in aussie equipped with M60D 7.62mm or some kind of laser guided projectiles?

"A man has been arrested after allegedly targeting a police helicopter with a laser pointer.

The Polair crew were hit with the green laser light at 10.15pm (AEST) Saturday as they conducted routine patrols of the Colyton area, in western Sydney.

A 29-year-old man was arrested at a unit block on Carpenter St, Colyton, after the helicopter crew were able to pinpoint the source of the laser.

Police seized a green laser pointer from the unit.

The man has been interviewed by Penrith police, but has been released pending further investigations. He has yet to be charged.

The laser attack follows another incident in south-west Sydney on Thursday night, when an 18-year-old man was arrested for shining a laser light at officers driving on Carlton Avenue in Chipping Norton."


They need to start charging these clowns under the terrorism laws and throwing them in jail for a few years, then they might start waking up to the idea that it's not so clever to do this.

This may be the answer...

As he began his sentence it emerged that two months before the incident he had been arrested after a police pursuit involving the same helicopter.

However, his barrister, Caroline Patrick, said he denied targeting the aircraft as an act of revenge.

She described Bottomley as an immature young man with "significant deficits in his thinking".

Some of you may recall a recent thread concerning two oafs who had targeted a l@zer pen at a police helicopter. They came before HH Judge Owen at Snaresbrook Crown Court who sentenced them to six months custody.

The Court of Appeal recently considered their appeals and dismissed them observing that in the view of their Lordships the case clearly crossed the custody threshold and such a case could not be dealt with by any lesser penalty.

The court further observed that His Honour Judge Owen "plainly took a great deal of care over this case." In passing sentence the learned judge said the message should go out that people who target helicopters in this idiotic and dangerous way should expect to receive custodial sentences.

Good on TO to sentence them for 6 months, but as we all know, they'll maybe do a month, possibly 2 at the most. Sky TV, 3 squares, Playstation, phone calls, ( 'uman rights you know!).
Some of these muppets know they are better off inside than out.

Excellent work by TO - and seems the Court Of Appeal also think so.

Interestingly, while reading this thread the google adds on the right hand side that pprune allows to pop up (or at least I presume it's pprune) offered 4 different sites to buy lasers, including "the most powerful available, will burn plastic"!!!!!! Pprune's not running a sideline are they??:confused:

Not harsh at all if you've ever been in an Aircraft that was targetted..
