Imagine life without Rule 5 Low Flying (video)
Posted by clearfinalsno1 in the Private Flying forum.
(His/her thread title.) I don't know if such a rule or organisation comparable to the CAA existed in Rio in the 1960's. However this Helicopter Pilot certainly doesn't care. Some extraordinary flying is shown in this video (I think it is from a 60's movie). Any unseen telephone or tram wires that exist in so many european cities would have been disastrous. Enjoy: Video: Very low level helicopter flight in Rio |
I have had dreams like that... |
OMG wow how stupid is that!! notice how hyper-active the guy is :ugh: :ugh: crasy mofo
but must have been fun though |
what are you people like if you watch the video you will see that the pilot is not flying and in one case leans out the side with no wind effects, the camara shots are too steady to be anything other than a nose or side mount, you never see the 300 in any shots over the town apart from the ones with our hero in and they all look fine to me.this not some nutter with a heli but a proper film it may look mad but that was probably the whole point.
Rant over :} |
There must be a lot of editing - in one shot, there is no passenger yet who is taking the shots of the pilot? The pilot is also sitting on the wrong side for a 300C! Who would have pressed his button?
Agreed I thought there was something odd about the flying; one doesn't want to let go of the cyclic for more than a nanosecond normally! Cheers Whirls |

Not sure how adding a nose mount makes this suddenly acceptable! Obviously he is on the ground when the exterior shots are done with him hanging out (where would the camera be otherwise), but there is a clear 300 shadow on the beach at one point. Still love to fly through a tunnel though - and trigger a GATSO as I exit.... |

the cyclic is nearly up to his shoulder at times, then every time he lurches forward, with the cyclic, the attitude doesn't change.
crack him off, Elvis was much better in blue Hawaii |
I always found the 300/269 to be pretty benign when flown hands-off if you trim it right... calm air of course. And when you use your right hand to do the radio, steering with the knees becomes quite run of the mill. Also useful for folding maps, repositioning headsets etc...

I really like this video, it reminds you a little of what helicopters are capable of.
obviously things must get safer all the time, but when you are looking at a 40 year old video, it is IMO ill advised to look at it with the current safety culture and criticise what they did then. having said that there are some things that stand out as being strange such as them all standing round the helipad as he lands at the end ! but what this really brings home to me is how much the world has changed and yet it is the same (if you know what I mean) ! regards CF |
i have my doubts about this video also. the cycle seems awfully high and he just doesnt look like he's flying it

Thank you Camp Freddie for reply in the spirit of things. There's been lots of discussion as to whether the guy in yellow is the actual pilot. This misses the point that someone has still flown a helicopter in this manner.
Yes, Freddie, I was surprised at how close the people are in the final helipad shot. Also as it emerges from the tunnel and the camera pans right, there are people just standing on the pavement. Some comments on the original webpage hosting the video suggest that the 60's were the golden age of Rio and that it was supposed to be a model for future cities, with a Concorde link to Europe. The roads certainly look new and devoid of vehicles. All this has changed in less than half a lifetime ! What does the future hold? |
this film is called "Roberto Carlos em Ritmo de Aventura" further info can be found here http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0188180/ I note that the reviews were poor.
Mr Carlos was and is a highly succesful brazilian singer and his profile can be found here and it says that the footballer was named after the singer !http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roberto_Carlos_%28singer%29 I guess its safe to say he wasnt flying it, but who cares, someone was as mr finalsno1 said. regards CF |
i really don't think this was a 60's video, was the hughes 300 even around then ??
look at his hair style - not really the 60's no video back then, so if shot with film equipment, would the large format camera equipment fit in the front of the 300 ? |
I don't care what helicopter it was, when it was shot, who was flying it, or how genuine it is.....
I WANNA FLY LIKE THAT!!! |
was the hughes 300 even around then ?? Cheers Whirls |
No way! He did not just fly through a tunnel
:ok: Good to watch though... |
well i stand red-faced with regaurds to my last post, a quick search revealed it was in fact around in the late 50's :ugh:
thanks Whirlygig |
