What is your dream Helicopter

What helicopter do you hope to fly some day?

I:
Aircrane
HH-65 Dauphin
Comanche
S-76

Chickenhawk1 25th Jul 2006 16:33

As a student pilot I'd have to say for the moment I'd love to get a go of a Huey. I know, I'm an ass. But someday it'd have to be an S-61. Someday.

acreager 25th Jul 2006 16:38

AW139, without a doubt. Beautiful machine.

Whirlygig 25th Jul 2006 16:44

I'd love to have a go flying a Chinook - it's such a big, noisy, lumbering beastie and I love 'em. So, if there's anyone out there who could help me out with that, you'd earn my undying gratitude (and maybe a few pints!)

Cheers

Patrick_Waugh 25th Jul 2006 16:54

I'd love to fly a Rotorway, especially if they ever make a turbine. Would be cool to own one and take a girl on a date in it.

SASless 25th Jul 2006 17:03

Whirls,

Once again you prove to all and sundry what "good taste" is all about. Never mind the slingloads....go for "the" real helicopter.

Surely someone at Odi can make that happen....so long as you leave the Banjo and Go-Go boots at home.

Whirlygig 25th Jul 2006 17:09

Where I used to live, next to the Kennet & Avon canal just out Thatcham, I could sit in my garden and watch the Chinooks flying overhead.

Nearby was a large expanse of wasteland over which much of the training took place I'm sure. I have sat there and waved up at them and, a couple of times, I've had a landing flashed back at me!

So if there's any of you guys out there who can remember a a demented woman waving at you on the banks of the canal, it were I!

Cheers

Whirls

The 407 is a great looking machine. Also the posts of BigMikes 427 looked awesome too!

Super Stallion - In a Class by Itself

The Sikorsky Super Stallion It flies just like one would expect a 13,000 hp. helicopter to fly. It is surprisingly agile for a big old girl and really fast. :ok:

whirlydude 25th Jul 2006 22:01

I have always liked the bell 222 not because of airwolf . The metropolitan (london) police used to have one back in the nineties you could always here it coming

bladepitch 25th Jul 2006 23:15

S-76 forever.

with out doubt the S-76 would be it.

i love women but im pretty sure that helo gave me my first woody at a young age. :E

Capt's Little Helper 26th Jul 2006 00:17

MH-68A "Stingray" http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0290849/L/
I like the look of it almost as much as scorched titanium on exhaust pipes. :8 :8
Plus there's usually a badass with a sniper rifle sat in the back of the cab:suspect: :suspect: :suspect: :suspect:

IFMU 26th Jul 2006 00:25

High cool factor

I'd like to fly the Sikorsky-Schweizer X2. Hover, 250 kts, hover. I bet it even autos.http://www.sikorsky.com/Images/SAC_S...r_Aircraft.jpg

Crikey - a pervert! Flown 'em for nearly ten years and the rotors STILL go round the wrong way.

Now, give me back my all-time favourite, the S-70 Blackhawk with the 701-C engines; nearly 1900 SHP each - now we are talking proper helicopters.

bladepitch 26th Jul 2006 00:50

shy torque.

i said dont spoil it.

have you got anything good to say about em?

I learned to fly in an enstrom. After getting my rating, I managed to get about 4 hours of time in a couple of S76's. First couple in an A model, the second couple in a B. To a junior birdman like me, it was awesome. Fast, powerful. I got to rack it over in 60 degree bank turns. I got to do wingovers (rotor-overs?). I got to shoot power recovery autos. I got to fly with SAS off, which was pretty challenging at full gallop. With SAS on, it was a dream to fly. And, since I had a grownup along every time, I didn't have to be smart about the systems. It's a great machine.

ShyTorque 26th Jul 2006 01:08

Yes, a well equipped S-76 is probably still the best IFR to VFR machine on the market today, which is extremely good considering how long in the tooth they now are.

We do a lot with ours that other operators can't.

bladepitch 26th Jul 2006 01:23

:ok: thanks guys.

that was good to hear.

IFMU. i had heard they were challenging to fly at full speed with out SAS. which is im guessing is the auto pilot. correct me if im wrong.
im hoping to get a crack at them in the next couple of years as a coey.

Flingwing207 26th Jul 2006 01:34

...as in teen-dream? Well, I'm flying one of them - the EC120 - sleek and sexy, even all these years later. The other is the MD530F or 500E, either one is still the 427 Camaro of the helicopter world. In third is the RAH-66 Comanche, with the AH-1 Cobra right on its heels. Finally, for sheer lumbering force combined with a strange beauty, it's the Ericson Aircrane (not to mention now I can bring all my toys with me).

Now all I need is a big hangar and a lifetime supply of Jet-A.

SAS is Stability Augmentation System. It's rate feedback for stability. I didn't fly with any of the autopilot functions like attitude hold. I turned trim off and pretty much just flew it. No way was I going to let the autopilot have any of the fun on my 4 hours.

MD 500D ............

helmet fire 26th Jul 2006 08:44

Wow, what a question. What I would most like to fly (that I haven't already)?
In the following order.....

My own machine!
then (with appropriate ordnance included of course....:8 ):
Rooivalk the ultimate gunship
AH-1Z Cobra the latest cockpit systems and I've always wanted to fly a Cobra. The AH-1J or T if the Z is not available!
A129 Mongoose agile and sexy are it's middle names
Bell 214 ST they just dont make them like this anymore
Bell 230 they just dont make them anymore and they look great
MD 902 Unique. and they may not make them much longer
KA-50 Russian attack power: love to sample it
S 92 A Black Hawk that you can walk around the back in, fantastic!
the A-10! I know its not a helicopter - but it's so good it could be squeezed into anyone's wish list!

....but really I'll fly anything that is free and looks safe!!

Bravo73 26th Jul 2006 08:58

I thought that we've already been through this...

Rotorheads Dream Heli

:E ;)

Pandalet 26th Jul 2006 09:02

I'd like to fly one of these:

http://oleg.idx.com.au/mi-26_ch-47_a...n_recovery.jpg

(the one on top ;))

That said, I'd love to fly a BO105 (or anything else that can do backflips or fly upside down).

In the real world, at this point in my flying career, I'd be pretty thrilled to be let out in a jetranger (ie. anything bigger than a robbo)...

Blackhawk9 26th Jul 2006 10:02

S70 Blackhawk , CH53, S92, Sikorsky all the way (not the S76 though no power!!!) sorry Eurocrap they just do it for me.

bullshitproof 26th Jul 2006 14:16

In reply to patrick waughn You know the old saying aim for the moon and if you land on a star you have not done bad, well if you miss patrick you are going to fall on your face.

rudestuff 26th Jul 2006 16:56

MD500.

For looks. Its the Lamborghini Countach Poster-boy of Helicopters - it's just not possible to find a sleeker machine. An aesthetically perfect tear-drop shape. Like the Jetranger, its become ubiquitous - and as a 'classic' everything is measured against it. Sure, some EC's are great looking machines, but in my eyes just don't quite compare. Kind of like Japanese sports cars - no matter how good they look, they're still not a Ferrari.

Of course the BO105 doesnt quite have the looks but sure does have the performance.
I'd like to fly the Lynx just because its the fastest - and an empty Chinook or Aircrane because of the size and power.

ron-powell 26th Jul 2006 17:31

Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne EMS derivative with a cabin large enough for three seats and a stretcher so we can put the in state King Airs out of business.

Kamov V-100 side by side tandem rotor. Loose the weapons systems and go faster.

Wanna-be 26th Jul 2006 17:49

MD500, the lamborghini under the helicopters?

I think its a very ugly helicopter; his leggs dont fit, football-shaped boddy and a strange hat under/behind the rotor.

But that is just mine opinion

flugholm 26th Jul 2006 18:14

How about this bunch of nails?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...gonal_view.jpg
Sikorsky RSRA/X-Wing
(Yes, it show I slightly prefer fixed wings... just in case....!) :ok:

ems300 26th Jul 2006 23:27

MD 500 D Model with the doors off and someone hanging out the side shooting venison on the way home and filling up the back with deer and thar!! That is great fun!!!!:ok:
Or live caputuring animals from it!! that is a great laugh from the pilots seat!!:D

If you talk to anybody who worked on it, I don't think any of them would consider it a dream machine.

:} 500 or 206 with spray gear on .

pumaboy 27th Jul 2006 16:24

Dream Helikopter?

Thier are a number of helicopters out their that would be in this category but it would have to be in order -: BV234 Chinook
AS332 Super Puma
EC155
EH101
S76
S61
The S-92 I,m affraid is too ugly it look's like a flying box it is as though no thought went in to the design of this helicopter, it will never be a classic like the Chinook or Puma.

Sikorsky try again!!!!!

may be you will succeed next time!!!!!

I'm sure their will be someone out their that will disagree with this but tell some who cares.

Fg Off Max Stout 27th Jul 2006 17:54

Whirls, a lady of exceptional taste. The mighty wokka may be big and noisy but there is nothing lumbering about it. With 8000shp in your left hand an empty cab performs very nicely - just try a bit of low level fighter affil. Combine that with a three-gun fit, a robust, reliable, proven design, a pretty comprehensive self defence suite, a great bunch of colleagues and you've got an all round good deal. So you want to have a ride in one, Whirls? If you're hot enough, I'm sure we could work something out.;)

Pandalet, the Halo certainly is an impressive beast - the size of an airliner but it can hover! Just to 'invert' that pic of yours, when I was operating Chinnies in Iraq, close to Shaibah, there was a Halo abandoned in the desert having been damaged (possibly LGBed) previously. When I returned 6 months later, the aircraft had been stripped to virtually nothing by local looters and scrappies. Unfortunately, I don't have any pics of that but it can still be seen on Google Earth - just.

At present id say,
B206B3 LATE model:oh:
407 a close second:D
Cobra decked out for fire fighting:ok:

S76 (ONE DAY!):{ (when im flying mr jnr Packer....im Knockin at your door Ascend Charlie!!:ugh: )
212 (wockka):}
S92.......EVENTUALLY when we get oil rigs up this way 100nm off shore!!

Then again ill Fly a Kite!!:p

Pandalet 28th Jul 2006 21:52

Fg Off Max Stout,

ooh, neat! counter-rotating blades = no tail rotor?

I'd trade my virginity for a wokka ride...assuming I could remember where I left it ;) How 'bout a DAB radio instead?

I just love the idea of flying something that's bigger than my house and requires 4 specialists to operate :ok:
