The helicopter is believed to have come down near Coupar Angus at 1015 GMT.

Air accident investigators are heading to the scene and diversions are in place.

Say again s l o w l y 21st Dec 2005 11:43

All of us here at Cumbernauld are feeling very sad and shocked at the moment. So all I'll say is R.I.P chaps and that this isn't the time for any speculation and can I ask that no-one reveals identities until it is done officially.

:( :(

206 jock 21st Dec 2005 12:11

Echoing all sentiments - it's a tragic event at any time, but especially so at this time of year.

One question - the pic from the BBC has been picked up off G-INFO: should this be permitted or encouraged?

Grainger 21st Dec 2005 12:20

I just heard about this when I phoned to book a flight for Friday. I know this aircraft - although I haven't flown in it myself, it was a familiar sight around the airfield. Don't know the identities yet, but I'm sure I will have spoken to the guys at some time or other.

Very shocked and upset. Condolences and RIP.

Weather seems fine here (Stirling) at the moment.

Look carefully - It isn't...

I’m shocked. A very sad day indeed.

(…..may I respectfully ask the moderator why this Scottish thread was so quickly moved, yet the GA seaplane accident in Florida remains ‘on the front page’ ?)

Capt Teflon

The thread was moved here by the R&N moderators.

I assume the 'GA seaplane accident' in Florida remains in R&N because it was an airline schedule flight and because 20 people were killed.

A helicopter accident involving a large loss of life would stay in R&N for longer, before eventually being moved to this forum to be joined with any associated thread already running here.
This is PPRuNe's helicopter forum

I'm surprised that the Beeb are linking straight through to the details on the G-INFO website.

Especially seeing as the Police haven't named the occupants as yet.

hector 21st Dec 2005 18:04

Was walking the dog about a couple of miles from the site at the time. Weather was CAVOK.

SilsoeSid 21st Dec 2005 18:20

IMHO, I think it fair enough that the press, having seen the registration on the wreckage at the scene, investigate further. Isn't that what 'you' would do if your mate phoned up and said, "'ere Joe, I heard a helicopter with reg G-XXX has gone down, what do you know about it?"
Do you ever wonder what G-INFO is for?
If the CAA don't like the way it is used then I'm sure they will drop it.

Besides, it tells us to whom the a/c is registered, not who was flying it!!

RIP

It's a horrible reminder what risks are involved with these jobs. My prayers go with the families and friends.

For the record, if I'm up next, please tear it apart, question my decisions, check the details, argue how it could have happened, work towards better understanding. I would hope something good could come out it.

Matthew.

Photo of G-WLLY

This photo has been lifted from a pBase photo gallery of mine without my consent or contact in any way. I will ask the BBC to explain & remove the photo from their website.

It was taken in 2001, when the aircraft was based Redhill & in different ownership. One of the same series I took has been uploaded to G-INFO, but it is not the same photo.

My condolences to the families & friends of the people who have lost their lives in this accident.

Mike Rice

UPDATE : I have had a call from the BBC reporter who used my photo, he has now removed the item from the website. I can only say sorry for any confusion the photograph I took may have caused. If I had been asked beforehand, I would not have given my permission for it to be used.

SASless 21st Dec 2005 23:16

Condolences to the families and friends....unfortunately this is something that all of us are faced with when we go flying. Knowing that does not make the loss any lighter, particularly at this time of the year. Prayers go out those grieving at this time.

Brilliant Stuff 22nd Dec 2005 00:02

Condolences to everyone.

Very sad.

Graviman 22nd Dec 2005 07:53

Always a great shame when any crew goes down, regardless of the cause.

Condolences to all involved.

Johe02 22nd Dec 2005 12:46

IMHO I believe more good than harm can come from speculating as to the cause of an accident. Talking through potential scenarios, lethal or otherwise will spread knowledge and experience.

What else can we do when we hear of an accident except offer our 'cyber' condolences until the AAIB report is published and say 'oh right, that was it then. .'

Anyway, isn't it up to the moderators to say what goes on these forums. . .?

:hmm:

mikedurward 22nd Dec 2005 13:02

Hi All,

Firstly let me add my condolences to both the families involved. A terrible time of the year for anything like this to happen.
I can sympathise and empathise with the families. I lost my father in January 1973 in a BEA viscount crash also in Perthshire.

I post this because I am totally disgusted with some TV reporting.

Can someone please tell me why a bloody penguin has priority over such a terrible event in Scotland?

R.I.P. Guys.

Regards

Mike Durward

Sincere condonlences to the family and friends of the pilots.

I'm writting from Florida but my family are from the area where the helicopter came down. So bearing in mind this is 3rd hand information, I was told by a relative, that a passing motorist saw the helicopter "break up" before coming down on a farm near meigle. I have not seen any of the news coverage and don't know if this was already reported.

Thomas coupling 22nd Dec 2005 18:03

Putting my Pprune hat on:

rumour from the local 'crew' is that it could be a wire strike - hence the break up in flt in CAVOK.

RIP guys.

The Scotsman

Helicopter victims named

Two men who died when a helicopter crashed into a field have been named by police.

Robert Philip Ward, 48, of Great Western Road in Glasgow and Edward Lapsley, 56, of Roland's Gill, Tyne and Wear, died when the aircraft crashed in farmland near Meigle in Perthshire.

Investigations have continued into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, with recovery of the wreckage also getting under way.

The men were the aircraft's only occupants when it fell to ground east of the A94 Coupar Angus to Meigle road at about 10.15am on Wednesday.

The helicopter was travelling from Cumbernauld to the Aberdeen area when it came down.

No one else was injured as a result of the accident.

Tayside Police held a briefing with officials from the Air Accident Investigation Branch from Farnborough.

A force spokesman said: "Methodical examination continued at the scene during the day, with officers combing the field section by section, and the recovery of the wreckage of the Bell 206 helicopter began."
Robert Philip Ward was known by friends and colleagues as Phil Ward.

Our sympathies to their loved ones at this sad time.

I knew Phil many years ago and will miss him deeply.

We lost touch several years ago and I am now in Canada. If anyone on here knows what the funeral arrangements are, I would be most grateful if they could let me know.

Many thanks

cjbiz 24th Dec 2005 00:34

Had known Phil and Eddie for nearly 2 years and was shocked when I heard what had happened.

Spoke to Phil early on Wednesday morning shortly before they were due to lift from Cumbernauld and was expecting them both for coffee(and our regular grumble about the world of aviation and computers!) at lunchtime so was very sad to hear the news.

RIP guys, you were a terrific pair and will be sorely missed by all at CHP.

Helibelly 24th Dec 2005 14:57

A sad occurence when nothing the pilot does can help. I have a question though. Does anyone know of this happening to any other B206 anywhere in the world before?
Anyone think the age (1969) had anything to do with it?
