Bristow Workers Strike. Caverton Workers Threaten Strike
Members of the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers on Thursday protested against the disparity in salaries and other allowances paid indigenous pilots compared to expatriates by Bristow Helicopters.
As a result, the pilots and engineers, embarked on a two-day strike. Well that will really help the company as it struggles to get over having all its S76 operations closed down after the ditching of an aircraft recently :ugh: . After getting rid of all the expats, first order of business is go on strike and blackmail the company. If it wasn't for BHNL's cadet program these people would still bottle peanuts on the streets of Lagos. Maybe Bristow should apply the same hiring requirements they apply to expats, let's see how many locals qualify to work at BHNL then?
And all this while oil is slipping past $37/barrel. You've got to love the Logic Free Zone of Nigeria! |

My views on immune and his poisonous posts are well known and I'm very happy to see the back of Imlach, but must take issue with you about your comments on the cadet programme in Titusville. Although the course leads to the award of the FAA CPL(H), to fulfil the oil company requirements for low hour flying as crew in aircraft contracted to them, the Bristow cadets also do the EASA ground school as it's more comprehensive. The R44 is only used for the EFIS transition as many of the cadets will be transitioning to helicopters with EFIS as their first twin type. The cost of the EASA/FAA combined programme with its 872 hours of ground school is $106,863. I was told that the company quote of $250,000 is not just the cost of the course, but includes air fares, hire cars, allowances whilst under training, HUET and twin conversion after training. Personally I think it's fair and I was quite happy to sign for the bond - I wasn't forced into it. |
Well, at last Mike Imlach has his just deserts. I doubt any tears will be shed at any of the Bristow bases where his abrasive manner and mass sackings endeared him to few. The sad thing is that he changed many people's lives for the worse and although he's now been given the push he will almost certainly have made enough out of Bristow to be able to lead a financially secure retirement.

Bloomberg) -- Oil producers are evacuating workers from the Niger Delta because of the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria’s most-important oil producing region, a union official said. “Our members have been evacuated from Chevron facilities, Shell facilities and from some independent oil companies and it’s very unfortunate,” Chika Onuegbu, the Rivers State chairman of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, said by phone from Port Harcourt, the region’s largest city. A resurgence of attacks on oil infrastructure has seen Nigerian production drop to the lowest in 20 years, compounding the impact of slumping crude prices on Africa’s largest economy. The current attacks echo a similar wave of violence between 2006 and 2009, which ended after militants accepted an amnesty from late-President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, disarming in exchange for cash payments. The militants have been frustrated by current President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to scale back the allowances. “The government needs to address this very quickly,” Onuegbu says. “Insecurity is becoming a big problem in the Niger Delta with the return of these attacks.” Safety Measures After a local newspaper reported the evacuations on Monday, Shell said that it’s monitoring the security situation and is taking steps for the safety of staff and contractors. About 90,000 barrels a day of output was halted last week following an attack on a offshore platform operated by a Chevron-led venture that serves as a gathering point for production from several fields. Even before that strike on Wednesday night, Nigerian oil production had fallen below 1.7 million barrels a day for the first time since 1994, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. A group calling itself the Niger Delta Avengers said on its website that it was responsible for the attack. The authenticity of the claim could not be verified by Bloomberg News. In February, Shell declared force majeure -- a legal clause that allows it to stop shipments without breaching contracts -- after an attack on a pipeline feeding the Forcados terminal, which typically exports about 200,000 barrels a day. The International Energy Agency estimated last month that Nigeria could lose an estimated $1 billion in revenue by May, when it expects repairs on Forcados to be completed. The terminal may not restart until June, Nigerian Oil Minister Emmanuel Kachikwu said April 20. |

A couple of glaring omissions by the author (not talking about fleet utilisation and clearly knowing nothing about valuing different types and sizes of helicopters) but overall paints an interesting view on the UK SAR contract which appears to be bleeding BRS dry of cash. NDA used explosives to damage the Escravos tank farm main electricity feed pipeline, which resulted in Chevron’s onshore activities in the Niger Delta being shut down. The attack follows NDA’s warning to Chevron that no repair works should be carried out to facilities previously targeted by the group, until NDA’s demands are fully met. NDA claimed on its official website May 11 that it suspected Chevron was preparing to carry out repair works at the Okan Valve platform, which was blown up by the group at the start of the month. In an emailed response to Rigzone, a Chevron spokesperson said that the company will not comment on the safety and security of its personnel and operations as a matter of long-standing policy. The Escravos incident comes after a series of other attacks on oil and gas companies operating in the Niger Delta. These include: May 13 – An explosion occurred at a Chevron oil well at the Marakaba pipeline in Warri. May 17 - A gas pipeline in Ogbembiri, Bayelsa state, belonging to Italy’s Eni, was blown up. The attack impacted approximately 1,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, according to an Eni spokesperson. May 22 – A crude oil pipeline in Bayelsa, operated by Eni subsidiary Nigerian Agip Oil Company, was damaged with dynamite. “Despite the heavy presence of military in the creeks, it will not stop us from carrying out our operations. We are ready to destroy more pipelines,” said NDA spokesperson Col. Mudoch Agbinibowe on the group’s website. “We won't only destroy pipelines, but will bring the fight to your tank farm and your Headquarters in Lekki, Lagos. If you continue to undermine us and go ahead with the repair works you won’t see us coming but we are coming for you,” the threat continued. As part of its demands, NDA wants to “free the people of the Niger Delta from environmental pollution, slavery and oppression,” according to a statement on the group’s site. |
