Well I work in Gander Newfoundland as the ONLY helicopter instructor (employed at a school anyways) east of Quebec.

I have roughly 1100 hours on the Schweizer 300CB, with a littlebit of R22/44 and 300C time under the belt, did a stint in the Royal Norwegian Navy, but it was on a ship as a comms operator, and only got to see helicopters from a distance.

Started flying in 1998, and have not regretted it since. Hope to get a "real" flying job shortly, flying something with more crew, more range, more speed, doing something meaningful that does NOT involve teaching newbie/wannabe's/gonnabe's ( I don't mind it, just tired of it!)

Otherwise, I'm from Norway, and hope to get back there soon.

I hold Canadian, US and Norwegian CPL/H, Canadian and US Instructor ratings, an US and Norwegian Instrument ratings with a CAA-N frozen ATP

Greetings,
I thought I would introduce myself and add my name to this collection of characters!

1) What type of flying? Well, this week it is instructing (as a reservist) at Naval Flight School in the Bell JetRanger - the young lieutenants and ensigns really keep you motivated! Next week, its back to my airline job and flying the Dornier 328 Regional Jet. Sweetheart of a little 32 pax jet (34,789 max gross but 12,100 lbs of thrust) and all glass cockpit to boot.

2) What types of aircraft? Well, about 1000 hours in the Dornier and 2000+ in the Bell, but I will always be a Boeing CH-46E pilot at heart. 1500+ hours in the "BattlePhrog" and 3 tours with Marine Corps Special Operations Capable Expeditionary Units.

3) Where? Somalia, Bosnia, Haiti, Israel, Ukraine, Romania, Tunisia, France, Turkey, Greece, Spain, Italy - plus several coast to coast US runs (MCAS New River, North Carolina to wonderful MCAS 29 Palms, California) Did 11 years active in the Corps.

Notables: The Corps is such a small place and everyone knows one another. My former CO was the XO of HMX (they fly the President). Also, a former squadron mate has command of VMMT-204 (the MV-22 Fleet Replacement Squadron). My roommate had the good fortune to be on the O'Grady rescue mission into Bosnia in '95 and my squadron had the misfortune of having the Marine Corps worst accident of the 1990's (a mid-air between a fully loaded CH-46E and a Cobra during the PurpleStar exercise in '96 - lost some good friends..)

What type of flying work do you do?

Most things that turn a quid Currently, skier transfers in the Australian Alps, which we have been doing for 7 years, and have moved about 28,000 passengers in a BK117. I also fly general charter ops around Melbourne and Victoria, film work (adverts and feature), photography, sling loads, fire fighting (Helitack and AAS), ambulance and occasional SAR. Well, search really, the rescue is better left to the professionals, although time constraints have led to a couple of pick ups of hypothermic victims. My company also is contracted for traffic reporting around Australia, but I have managed to avoid the early starts associated with that character building occupation

What types(s) do you fly?

Current on A109, BK117, Bell 206 & PA34. Lots of other types on the licence, even R22, but that was under sufferance

Where? (As precise as you can be without losing anonymity.)

The real John Eacott lost anonymity years ago Currently, Melbourne, Australia, having migrated 24 years ago from UK.

Previous jobs?

Really, really lucky. Always wanted to be a pilot, even wanted to drive helicopters from an early age, and got a PPL Flying Scholarship from the ATC at 17. Then the RAF would only give me a non flying place at Cranwell because of weak eyesight, but by a bizarre set of coincidences I found that the RN only required 6/18 (or 20/60 for the North Americans) for helicopter pilots. Applied, got accepted, and the DCI (Defence Council Instruction) closing the loophole and upping the eyesight standards was issued in my first week at BRNC Dartmouth!

8 years RN, five in carriers, always in the sh*t, only the depth varied. All theatres except the Pacific, Sea King ASW with lots of jollies and variety. No idea how or why, but I scored 90% of all squadron jollies, probably to get rid of me.

Offshore oil support in Nigeria, North Sea, North West Shelf of Australia, New Zealand, India, Ireland and finally Bass Strait.

Victoria Police for a year, terrific flying, awful politics, and nothing's changed (much).

Started The Helicopter Service Australia in 1984, now operating in four states of Australia, seven aircraft (including plank wings ) A bit of a web site at www.helicopterservice.com.au , if you haven't been there, some photos on the Gallery page of helicopters and flying.

Previous types?

Hiller 12E, Whirlwind, Wessex (HAS1 & 3, Mk60), Sea King (HAS1 & Egyptian and Pakistani variants), Allouette 2 & 3, Bell 205, 206, 212, 412, SA365, S61, S76, H500, R22, R44 (under sufferance...), various plank wings.

Military / ex-Military? (Which? What types?)

Royal Navy, of course

How long have you been flying?

Since Pontius was a pilot..... when I were a lad, there wasn't a Channel Fleet, England was still joined to the Continent.....The RAF wasn't wearing blue, they were painted with woad....you get the picture

Overall, I've been incredibly lucky, and have turned my passion and hobby into a career. No intention of leaving it, at least not voluntarily, and more than happy to see others follow on and help them if I can

How many hours?

About 13500, if only I could get my log book added up properly.

This is me......

What type of flying work do you do?

Mostly everything, bit of IFR, oil patch, seismic, some movie (a tiny bit of K-19, plus others) but mostly specialise in fire suppression and a bit of ferry work around the States - currently with Remote in Slave Lake, who are an extremely good bunch

This was taken in a quiet moment resupplying some fire camps in Ontario:

What types(s) do you fly?

407, 206, AStar, TwinStar

Where? (As precise as you can be without losing anonymity.)

Canada, plus Scotland in Winter

Previous jobs?

Pianist in a gay bar (joke)
Movement Controller (e.g. Army Travel Agent)
Computer technician
Computer Trainer
Tech Author (software & operations manuals, own publications)

Previous types?
PA31, Aztec, Caravan II

Military / ex-Military? (Which? What types?)
Her Majesty's Camel Corps (AAC - previously RCT, which I believe is now part of the Really Lovely Corps). Flew Sioux, Scout, Beaver, Gazelle, in that order

How long have you been flying?

Seems like ages (I know I was mess waiter at the last supper, and I was on fire picket when Rome burnt down) but seriously, since 1976, with an 8-year gap during one of those depressions to do computing, which I still dabble in

How many hours?

7300, 4300 of which is helicopter

Future plans

Do an instructor rating - the only thing that's stopped me so far is having to fly a robbie

Try to longline properly in an Astar

Most endearing quality

Thoroughly black sense of humour

Paco also writes the Helicopter Pilots' Handbook. Link
