Mexican registration heli in europe

Can I operate a helicopter with Mexican registration in Europe?I have a helicopter with Mexican registration (XA) that we want to move to a yacht in Europe and fly from there, is this possible?

The idea is that we make a contract with a European operator.

this aircraft would only fly privately for us.

I would contact a European operator and figure out the details with them, I think it will depend on whether you're talking about one or two flights, or intensive operations over a longer period. I will send you a PM. You may not be able to respond to a PM until you've got more posts. I cannot remember the limits there.

When I had a similar issue years ago my friendly CAA inspector explained it like this:

Aircraft
Airspace
Pilot's Licence

Of the above list you have to have two out of three - so you could fly your Mexican heli with a Mexican pilot anywhere, but put an EASA pilot in it and you can only fly it in Mexican airspace or reregister the heli in EASA land and your Mexican pilot can fly all through Europe.

I operate an N reg helicopter all through europe off a yacht without any issues at all.

your biggest problem is going to be finding repair stations that will work on that registry if you don’t have your own mechanic for everything

You' might have to deal with customs when landing basically anywhere. The pilot will need the Mexican as well as an EASA license for flights in Europe.

The above information is not remotely correct, as someone who literally flys a FAA registered helicopter with an FAA pilot certificate (no easa license at all), flying on and off a yacht that’s cayman island registered. Throughout europe both Schengen and non-Schengen countries.

Varies for each location, some airports want a gendec for each landing, other airports and handlers don’t care so long as you’ve cleared in country prior to flying around. Landing off airfield is really dependent on each country as to whether you need a permit or approval etc. usually not difficult to obtain.

I’ve been ramp checked, safa checked multiple times and never had any issues whatsoever flying around with only an FAA certificate on an N reg aircraft.

Just ensure the aircraft has been imported to ‘the yacht’ from a customs perspective and then the helicopter is considered a tender or boat equipment and is run under the yacht’s equipment list whenever you come into port.

If you pull helo off the yacht and hangar it for a length of time for maintenance etc, the maintenance organization usually takes care of a temporary import certificate or your yacht agent deals with customs using a TPA so there’s no vat or customs duty on the helo etc.

oh and there’s no need to have any contract with a European operator. They usually screw up your paperwork or charge you ridiculous fees for things that are free (eg French Helisurfaces permits as one example). Just handle everything yourself, it’s much easier and quicker.

Operated on and off as described for about 20 years on VP-C, VP-B, M- and ZK-. No issues.

Just be aware of customs limitations for "Temporary Admission" of 6 months and clear in and out as part of the yacht declaration. It is important to clear IN and OUT especially as it can "reset" the 6 months. Do not have anything that indicates any type of permanent or enduring connection with the EU and especially the Beneficiary.

As havick says - everything else is basically free. You will need a "helisurface permit" for the yacht in France which needs to be applied for about this time of the year to the PRÉFET MARITIME DE LA MÉDITERRANÉE in Toulon and also an "Authorisation to Use Helisurfaces" (Habilitation a Utiliser les Helisurfaces) for each and every foreign PIC operating in Fance and that includes the use of the helisurface on the yacht.

"Francaise seulement" mostly - send them an email and ask them what info they need first as it changes. Preferably in French.

When the yacht helisurface permit is issued it is promulgated in the public domain and to just about every local authority in the French Mediterranean - do NOT operate without one as they all know if you have one or not!

If you wish to operate in the coming season I would start ASAP!

You just don't know the rules. Then again you probably don't have a residence in the EU, so they don't apply to you personally.
I as a EU citizen have operated a non EASA reg'd heli on a superyacht myself, so there is that.
The point may be moot as his pilot is probably Mexican anyway.

We were bugged by customs pretty much everytime we landed at an airport for fuel. They asked how long the aircraft had been in the EU, whether it had been imported and tax been paid. One country stuck out in particular...

Regarding the French helisurface permit.
The Paris Police is in charge of Pilots who don't have a French residency. The application is filed online here. Takes 4 to 5 weeks to get the permit as a PDF via email.

    Part-NCC/NCO Air Operations Regulations European pilots or pilots flying for a European operator will have to hold a European licence irrespective of whether the aircraft is EU registered or registered in a third country.
    I guess that clears that point up.

    Just because you don't hold an EU licence doesn't mean you dont' know the rules? If you are an EU citizen in a foreign aircraft you will attract more attention.
