Ninian North

Many of you will have flown to the Ninian North platform in the East Shetland Basin.
Today, the jacket is being unloaded for decommissioning in Dale's voe just to the west of Lerwick Shetland.

I remember taking the first helideck crew to NN from NC in a B105 after the topsides where installed but before it was manned up. We shut down and walked through the accommodation module which still had plastic covers over all the floor surfaces and furniture. It seems like yesterday. Must have been 43 years ago !

Christmas 1996, first trip offshore as a civvy, Radio Op on Ninian North. Wife had packed a small gift to be opened on Christmas morning, which, when unwrapped, turned-out to be a box of Asbach Brandy liqueur chocolates.

The little tug pushing against the side of the Pioneering Spirit is the Green Isle - skippered by my step-son!
He said they feel pretty tiny alongside that huge vessel. (382m long, 124m wide, 403,000 gross tons, 1,000,000 tonnes displacement at maximum draft - the widest, and heaviest, ship in the world)

North of sixty , the duty free allowance was more on the northern than the other rigs in the Ninian field . The southern and a central .
The northern would sway more in a storm than the southern. The Central being concrete did not move . The Northern steel jacket was upgraded half life as it had some nodules reinforced due to wave action and stress corrosion. The little bolkow rides on the mail runs were fun . Good times .

Heres a video on the transfer, ship to shore via the barge. Courtesy of the Shetland News and Lerwick port authority.

I presume that's the winchman, who's been turning on or checking the Navigation lights?
