Agreed book lesson is good awareness to a possible mechanism to a problem, don't let it fool you that it is enough.
Experiencing a real unexpectedly degrading situation at the controls and having your instructor letting you mess up just enough before resolving the problem is much more effective.

I suppose some here prefer the "learn as you go method" and have no need to expand their knowledge by study outside the cockpit.
