Cornish, the incident I was involved in was flown by a QHI during my basic rotary training course, who was just a little too exuberant when flying a low level join at our relief landing ground at Chetwynd. The slight complication in our case was when the aircraft snap rolled upright we were looking almost straight at (and below the cables of) a set of HT pylons that had previously been just off to our left; we were in a steep right turn to avoid them. The QHI made a debrief point of the incident. Later in the course one exercise was to be given a demo of RBS at 10,000 feet. It wasn't anywhere near as effective as my earlier demo!

Crab, my spouse and I used to ride with a group at SA called the " Yellow Pipe Gang " ( some of the exhausts had turned that color ). I cannot imagine using the term fescalized in a US motorcycle group discussion. You know, it begins with " f " and liable to generate various versions thereof. What language does it arise from?

John D - the origin for 'fescalised' intrigued me also 'cos it was used for checking correct oleo extensions. Then one day I picked up an old engineering magazine '30s/40s era and there was an advertisement for the company which carried out the process. I think (therefore it's likely to be wrong!) that the company itself was 'Fescalise' but it may have just been the process. Sort of 'Hoover' for cleaners or Thermos for vacuum flasks.

Thanks for the history CJ. Too bad I don’t go to meetings anymore where I could drop that term at a relevant point and watch the expressions of all the rest of the folks, none of whom had ever heard it before.

Cornish Jack - I think you may be correct, some of the google hits pointed at a proprietary name for the chroming process and it is a much nicer origin than the one about goats!
John - I find dropping the phrase 'crepuscular rays' into any met discussion has a similar effect.
