I have noticed that when POTUS talks to reporters, or walks to the machine, the turbines often sound like they're running, but the blades are not yet turning.
Does the VH-3D have a ground idle setting which is used at this point - once he's on board then flight idle selected and blades begin to turn?

Not exactly a Sea King - I believe its known as an H3 across the pond. I think it has different engines, but I would imagine the same gearbox, including the accessory drive. As a maritime helicopter, the acc drive is part of the basic design to provide hydraulic power to fold/unfold the blades onboard ship.
As do the Sikorsky Sea King/SH-3
Getting back to the OP, the engines can be running and the rotors held on the rotor brake.
Sikorsky H3. T-58 engines. Engine sits at Ground Idle in Acc drive. No clutch, no holding on rotor brake. Just sitting there at 51-58 Nf.
His helo is one of 5. They fly mostly everywhere as a 5 ship and swap postions frequently. This deters G2A missiles locking onto the one with the Protus onboard.
The APU is a test bed being readied for the replacement programme for the presidents helicopter.
