Eurocopter win contract for IFR conversion of Sikorsky CH-53s

The German Federal Office for Defence Technology and Procurement has placed a multi-million Euro order with Eurocopter for the conversion of 38 CH-53G/GS army helicopters to upgrade them for IMC flights.
Europcopter say the conversion programme will be completed at the end of 2005 and is intended to meet civil and military certification requirements for IMC flights, and fulfil operational requirements in new international mission scenarios of the NATO alliance.
Nineteen CH-53 G and GS models will be equipped with multifunction active matrix LCD screens replacing part of the analogue displays.
The IFR helicopters will also be fitted with GPS, a second VHF/AM radio, and new DME replacimg TACAN to meet the requirements for civil landing approach procedures at airports.
