Mi-26 discovers new unchartered Arctic Island

The island was identified from the air above the Vasilevsky shallows
by two Mi-26 helicopters that were carrying equipment from the
Yakutian port of Tiksi to the Novosibirskie Islands. This geographical
discovery expands the Russian Federation's territorial waters
by 452 square kilometres.shallows by two Russian

I bet it was outside territorial waters when they found it, but of course with an Mi-26 you can just sling load an island closer to the mainland.

Hillco...just what I was kind of thinking?..how many sling loads of soil would you need to create this island and extend your territory for oil and gas exploration!

The new island was named ‘Yaya’ – as every member of crew on board the Mi-26s started saying, excitedly, ‘I found it, I found it’ (‘ya’ means ‘I’ in Russian).
