life jacket - update

Can you give me update info about life jacket requirements ?
Private flight - A109 helicopter distance 56 NM from land.
According my knowledge life jackets are mandatory when flying more than 50NM from land .
Is it enough to have it on-board or everybody needs to put it on ?

From a practical point of view, if you're aren't wearing it when the helicopter hits the sea, you'll never get it on afterwards.

If you ditch at 50 nms or 56 nms does it make difference.
Common sense should prevail.
