Mode S/C
Need some advice. Just bought a heli which is on South coast and will be flying it back to Glasgow soon. It is fitted with an old Narco Transponder with no mode s or c, so no altitude data. Do I need to replace this to fly in/ through controlled airspace. Been getting some conflicting info. I'm a private pilot and only private use and the heli will be based within Glasgow's controlled airspace Help????

canīt point you to the appropriate regulations at the moment, but as far as I recall
You can fly with the old transponder, cause you could also fly without, as long as you donīt enter TMZ (Transponder Mandandory Zone)
BUT - youīre down to airtraffics approval.
They can accept you without Transponder or without C / S - but they donīt have to, if weather or traffic is problem.
If you have to enter a Controlzone, give them a phonecall in advance - you get an answer and they know, whoīs coming.
Filling a flghtplan - with remaks that Mode S / C isnīt servicable might also help - if the plan gets accepted, everythings fine for you.

They should let you through Class D like that but it is down to them. If you route up the East coast it should be easier as there is less controlled airspace there. PM sent to you also.

And if you are planning an E Coast route (which I prefer myself) and you want fuel somewhere around Hull then consider giving Breighteon a call. The Real Aeroplane Company - Breighton Aerodrome
Smashing chaps, self-service Avgas and Jet fuel (bring a credit card) and so, so, much less cost / hassle than going into one of the larger airfields nearby (in my personal experience).

Thanks to all for help and advice. I have spoken with Glasgow ATC and they have been very helpful saying that other than TMZ's it should be fine. John R81 thanks for that link, and I will def be dropping in there on the way home, hopefully not literally
