Best video camera
I should be ready to solo soon and I'd like to capture the experience with a video - maybe with a headband camera. What is the best choice? I've looked at the GoPro site. Is that the best way to go?

The last thing you should be thinking about on a first solo is a camera!
Unless fixed on the helicopter itself, out of your way,,,get on with the solo and enjoy the experience without having to think about the camera!
Distractions in the cockpit should be avoided!
Apart from that,,,have a good one!

Best video camera
Gopro hero 3 is what I use . Great pics and audio but not cheap . It's a great thing to have a vid of your first solo but to repeat a previous comment a safe flight with no distractions is more important , either way enjoy and happy landings

Get somebody to video you from the ground.
Otherwise, we see on Yewchoob the last moments of your solo as you turn to smile at the camera, reach over to adjust the camera angle, ... and the video suddenly stops with a lot of black static.

Tradford - helijock and the other guys are right.
I'm not rated Rotary-wing, but the day you first rise into the blue on your own whether wing or blade-borne is one you remember for the rest of your life.
You're quite keyed up, and focusing very intently - even moreso in a helicopter I suspect... so leave the camera on the ground and focus on flying would be my counsel.
Oh - and the recommendations about GoPro are on the money - our family has the Hero 3 Silver - and it's the dog's bollocks - bloody great camera - has filmed Little Tartare and Tartarette skateboarding, skiing, swimming - as well as been bolted to the Ducati while blasting around town.
