Canadian Coast Guard BO 105 Down in Arctic

3 crew are dead.

Three bodies recovered from the water by CG ship after over 3 hours immersion.

Details are scanty otherwise.

RIP folks, condolences to the families.

sorry to hear this.

4 children! heart out to you - we're all sorry - great guys I'm sure - be strong children you'll need to be and remember it is better to live a day as a lion than a lifetime as a mouse - and your fathers were lions, and you can be too.

I've flown there, normally there's enough ice to land on if you need to - still true in early September?

[Strange choice to use unreliable twins in an area so harsh - when a B3 would be ideal. Was the cause of the previous BO105 in 2005 ever established?]

There those out there that believe any twin is catgorically better than any single. I disagree.

R.I.P. Regardless.

Condolences

Condolences.

Strange, the comments on twins vs. singles. I'm at a loss to imagine how anyone thinks flying a single engine aircraft vs. a twin in that environment would make the operation safer, or would have prevented the crash.

Sad news indeed.
Thoughts and prayers for the friends and families of these good men.
Thoughts also for their Coast Guard shipmates and co-workers.

The pilot comes from the same region of Quebec (Abitibi) that I do.

Three men who died when a Canadian Coast Guard helicopter plunged into the Arctic Ocean last week were not killed by the crash but died of hypothermia, according to a preliminary post-mortem.

Cathy Menard, Northwest Territories chief coroner, said the results revealed the three men were not seriously injured in the crash.

Menard said it is believed Marc Thibault, the commander of the Amundsen, Daniel Dubé, the helicopter pilot, and Klaus Hochheim, a researcher studying sea ice, were in the water for an hour before rescuers pulled them out. All three were wearing survival suits.

Emergency flotation gear not activated, just one unproperly inflated lifejacket, just one survival suit ????
Unnecessary loss of life
