NIMBY's strike again

Protesters complaining about helicopter flights making too much noise during Deal Regatta Week have been labelled as “party-poopers and miserable”.

The description came from John Trickey, chairman of the Deal, Walmer and Kingsdown Regatta Association, who was left angry at the loss of the popular trips, now banned.

Flights by Manston-based Heli-Charter took place during the weekend before the carnival and also on the day of the procession. But complaints were made to the district council, much to the annoyance of the regatta committee.

Ellen Pughe, the company’s operations assistant, said: “The only site that is suitable to fly from and adheres to the rules and regulations put in place by the Civil Aviation Authority is the site we have used for the past 10 years at least.

“Unfortunately, due to three complainants, Dover District Council will not allow us to carry on operating from this site. We cannot find an alternative site for our operations to take place.”

"...three complainants..."

I had to read that several times...but three complainants brought an end to it, in spite of apparent popular appeal?

Hmmmmmm,

Maybe a few private operators should fly in and out of the venue, all day long, just for the sheer hell of it!!!

So if they consider 3 complaints to be justification to stop an approved operation, it can't be that difficult to get six complaints to call the council for the operation to be re-opened?

"Dear Council, I wish to complain that I had expected to fly over the event and demand this advertised option be reinstated"

cc the Daily Mail, of course

I'm presuming that the only mechanism that they have to stop this operation is that they own the bit of ground that was used. Otherwise, as long as the operation is CAA compliant then the local authority can do little about it i would have thought (as long as it does not exceed the 28 days a year land use rule).

Does seem harsh - Three complaints v hundreds of people buying tickets.

"Complaints made to the council prompted officers to monitor noise".
Monitor and what? What did they actually find?

That noise levels went up when the helicopter came to land and the children screamed with excitement!

Nimby's

Noisy.. during regatta week.. who would've thought. It's the sound of others having fun and local communities thriving that some people just can't stand.

These three complainants are probably the same three people who would not think twice about starting up their petrol lawn mowers and droning on for a couple of hours non-stop every Sunday throught Spring and Summer, which can be a major disturber of the peace!

I can remember when they built a housing estate next to Booker airfield and some of the people who had bought the houses complained about aircraft noise!

Got this back from the council....

Dear '

I can confirm that Dover District Council did not ban the helicopter rides during Deal regatta week and has no wish to do so at the present time. The Council is, however, continuing to work with the company and event organisers in order to try and ensure that noise impact from helicopter rides at events is minimised as far as is reasonably practicable.

Regards,

Diane Croucher
