Aerial filming; disruptive technology ahead
A new era of aerial filming could be upon us
Nettmann, Shotover and GSS systems will each be showing new stabilised aerial gimbals at the yearly TV trade show next week, each costing +US$400k.
But a sudden rush of new 15 to 20 inch sized gimbals isn't the news.
Also on show will be this system designed for hand held use.... for US$15k!
Born from the world of UAVs.
So in the years ahead expect more doors-off flights with inexperienced aerial camera operators, hand holding this rig and production teams booking the cheapest local aircraft.
Whilst it will eliminate the hazards of the bungy mounts! it will still encourage low, slow and crabbing flight and because the rig can be pointed vertically down it will encourage cameramen to sit on the floor, with legs dangling.
It will be available as a rental item so anyone will be able to use it.
So as much as this technology will benifit the audience, unless the message sinks in, the rate of accidents of doors-off filming looks set to increase in the future.
As demonstrated in the autorotation thread, cameramen need special management that takes into account their overiding drive to "get the shot" ahead of self preservation, a drive that has often affected a pilot's judgement.
