Mil Down: Syria

The footage appears to reveal an Mi8 or 17 (I think).

I'm not sure if I will ever get used to people 'thanking god profusely' over acts of killing.

Yes in war this must be done but .. we need not 'rejoice' over it. People (in war) sometimes have to be eliminated but when this happens there should be a sense of remorse on the part of the killers .. a sadness if you like .. that they have been required to take such action.

QAZWSX: You may be right!

Quite apart from my lack of appreciation for the 'ethos' of the rebels .. I was also slightly alarmed at the apparent vulnerability of the Mil. I was of the belief that most of those 'in theatre' in Syria were 'counter measures' equipped. Obviously not!

QAZWSX:
I too can do without the soundtrack of proclaiming the greatness of God, but I'll offer to you that "Allahu Akhbar" seems to be the Muslim world's way of saying "****in_AAAAY!" whenever something good, or perceived to be good, occurs. Cultural thing.

In re the video: it is worth noting that hand held SAMS are now confirmed in Syria in the hands of all sorts of people (if we are sure that Syria is where that took place).

No more guessing. That might be of interest to many folks.

The Helicopter was flying at an altitude that I am guessing was intended to prevent too much small arms fire exposure, which puts it in the sweet spot for a MANPAD, IR guided.

As this is the Rotorheads forum, maybe your point is that this should be moved to the Military Aircrew forum as the Military gents certainly have a professional interest in this sort of thing.

But shouldn't contract helicopter pilots also have an interest? Does any of us believe that these various militia and rebels have tight RoE like professional military folks do?

The airspace is getting less safe, not more so.

Will PM mods and see if they think a move is warranted.

Face it folks....War is a nasty business....people get killed in ugly ways....and the people doing the killing enjoy it when they have a success against their enemy.

That is life.....deal with it.

Just as I endorse showing the results of aircraft crashes, car wrecks, motorcycle wrecks and other ugly sights.....so long as it is not merely gratuitous viewing....I see nothing wrong with it. Gratuitous viewing of such video is just a another deviant form of pornography.

Those that find it upsetting to move from the abstract to reality.....perhaps a bit of reality therapy might be beneficial if it brings home what this "War" thing is all about. It is not just words, phrases, and numbers.....it is all about blood, pain, suffering, misery, and death.....horrible death.

Correct me if I am wrong....it did not go "up" in flames.....it went "Down" in flames!

I am on the side of the Rebels in this matter.....and see the downing's as a mark of success for their side.

SAS: I don't know of a single person among my circle of friends who isn't in support of the FSA and against Assad's regime.

However, from a purely dispassionate perspective I remain astonished that these Mil's are running around without counter-measures.

I mean if I was a Squadron Commander I wouldn't want to be sending my boys out each morning to be picked-off by any SAM-wielding do-gooder who might just happen to be lurking within range of our aircraft!
