No such thing as an open area in India....
As a regular traveler to India I would observe that even if this "open area" was within auto distance it is almost certain that it would have been covered with kids playing cricket. :-)

If he had fuel cans in the area they would be used to defuel the helicopter- to reduce the fire hazard & reduce the weight making it easier to handle.

(You even look close you can see the blade scares on the cement roof & how the blades were damaged)If you ever had to auto a 300 you would be looking between your toes for where the landing would be,
The group on the roof looked a Cal Trans road crew (1 worker & 25 supervisors)
