North Sea/irish SAR Acft DF & AIS Capability

Question: Can the North Sea or irish SAR aircraft DF on AIS using just the DF? Or do they need the AIS equipment (SAAB?) to interact with a AIS SART? I ask since on the US side we have DF equipment but I am not sure about the capability to track to that. I left the active SAR service in the US back in 2003 so any help in catching myself up on the this technology would be appreciated!

I understand that North Sea helicopters have SARTs either onboard/in the rafts; are these the RADAR Transponder SARTs or the AIS SARTs or both?
Thanks
