225 in a 225

Strong wind today - got 225 kts groundspeed in the EC225.



Sorry about blurry photo - it was not that rough, just shook the camera at the wrong moment and by the time I took the next one it was 224 kts which spoilt the effect.

Maybe someone should post an S92 doing 92 kts (they do go that fast, don't they?), 61kts in an S61 etc. The interesting one would be 332kts in an AS332L...

Actually had 200 kts in a 61 once in the Canadian arctic......unfortunately also had 30 kts on the return

Used to have an ongoing competition of who could get a photo of the highest G/S with a pal of mine who flew the same type for a different company.

He became very frustrated that i always managed to post one 5 kts higher than anything he managed.

It was ages before he realised that i had taken a series of photographs in the sim one year with increasingly large "tail-winds". It was a good game while it lasted.

332 Knots in a 332.....er...ah...no thank you! Only way that would happen is sans blades probably!

The Bell 47 was probably well named....as that was about the average GS it could maintain.

I was speaking one day to a SAR captain about flying the Seaking in his previous job
He told me of a callout one evening in a storm (west coast Norway)
and headwind was in the region of 100kts
They had to turn back as they travelling so slow they calculated that they would run out of fuel before they got to their destination

What the..?



Got caught in a lee side wind that slowed us down to less than 30 mph ground speed. We decided we weren't going anywhere so we turned around and by the time I got the camera out we were already slowing down from a top speed of 250 mph (not knots) in the 350 BA. Amazingly smooth ride though for a estimated 90-120 mph (foehn?) wind.

That is close to 350 for a 350 (km/h).

You can get an IAS of 225 on a Chinese 332L1.

245kts in a 365 (October 1987 anyone remember?)

45kts on the way back - ouch

I also remember someone (presently with "sand in me crack") 200Kts ias

They are, but as I said in the original post, I shook the camera (due to turbulence) at the wrong moment and missed the opportunity.

HC....are we not becoming too rigidly glued to procedure here?

A slight nudge on the cyclic...or in your case a bit of push on a button lowering the nose a tad....and you would have been back at that magic number!
