Crash in Slave Lake Alberta

Tragic!

SLAVE LAKE, Alta. - A helicopter fighting wildfires in northern Alberta has crashed, killing the pilot.

Police say the male pilot, who was not identified, was declared dead at the scene of the crash on the south shore of Lesser Slave Lake, northwest of

Edmonton.

Rescue crews were called around 3 p.m. and found the helicopter 30 metres off shore in shallow water.

Attempts to rescue the pilot led to a number of emergency workers having to be treated for hypothermia.

The Transportation Safety Board says the Bell 212 craft belongs to Campbell Helicopters of Abbotsford, B.C., and had been hired by the Alberta government to help fight several wildfires in the area.

The crash was just 16 kilometres west of the town Slave Lake, where a week ago the entire community of 7,000 was ordered out ahead of the rampaging flames.

plus a second, non-fatal accident Monday with STARS air ambulance ferrying a B206 pilot in to Edmonton for medical attention. Reportedly not linked to firefighting ops, but in same area
