Japan begins air drop on stricken reactor

Thursday March 17th 2011

Military helicopters dumped seawater on to Japan's stricken nuclear complex today, turning to combat-style tactics while trying to cool overheated uranium fuel that may be on the verge of spewing out more radiation.

Plant operators also said they were racing to finish a new power line that could restore cooling systems and ease the crisis at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant on the country's northeast coast.

Not so much 'helicopter response' as 'helicopter carnage,' but remarkable footage.

HeliOps Japan

A new AS365 N3 helicopter has been delivered by Eurocopter to Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA) for operations in Miyagi Prefecture. The new aircraft is the third of its type for the FDMA, and is a replacement for the agency’s BK117 C-2 which was damaged during the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.
