Stornoway Coastguard Helicopter Reaches 200th Mission Of 2010

At 18.44 pm yesterday evening, Stornoway Coastguard rescue helicopter R100 was scrambled by Stornoway Coastguard after they had received a request for assistance from the NHS.
Sikorsky S92The helicopter was sent to evacuate a fifty seven year old lady who was being seen by a doctor, who requested that she be evacuated to hospital urgently as she was experiencing breathing difficulties.
The Kinlochbervie Coastguard rescue team were called out to set up a landing site for the helicopter. The helicopter took the lady onboard and took her to Raigmore Hospital Inverness.
Ed Thompson, Watch Manager, Stornoway Coastguard said:
This is the 200th mission for this helicopter in 2010. This is the first time in the history of the Stornoway unit that it has achieved this number of callouts in any one year.
We wish the lady well in her treatment and hope she makes a speedy recovery.

That's nothing! Lossie achieved their 200th airtest of 2010 back in August. Yah boo sucks, S-92 wallahs.

Lucky they didn't have to reverse towards a cliff, with a 50 kt onshore wind, or they'd still be stuck at 199 missions.......

Sarcy remarks aside.....Well Done to Stornoway....and I'm sure the relatively large number of missions has helped them get to grips with the "new" cab much better than if it had been quieter.
This also shows how things can become more balanced across the country once all the bases have the same capability.....old arguments and ownership perspectives aside....this will be one of the most important operational benefits of the SAR-H programme.
When the SK was introduced all those years ago. it didn't take long before the average call out rate doubled from the standard applicable in the 1970s...and by now has reached about 3 times what it was in the "good old" daylight only days. It will be interesting to see if a common and capable S92 fleet ends up doing much more in the future....if so that will rather mess up the PFI contract planning figures!

A-Flight 22 Squadron, which is based at RMB Chivenor, has revealed there have been 210 rescue mission as of Tuesday in 2010.
Recent missions have included helping a 43-year-old man who suffering head injuries after falling from a cliff in Combe Martin on Saturday.
The 210th job this week involved three divers who were transported to Derriford Hospital after suffering bends when diving off Skomer Island near Wales.

But that is not a press release from either the MoD or the SARF - just an article by a journo
I'm not suggesting that the boys and girls at Stornoway are doing anything other than a sterling job - maybe the MCA press office just wanted some good news out before the cuts in MCA manning and centres are announced.

Crab to be fair I think you might find that the MCA were a bit shocked over how many jobs have been carried out so far. It's an increase of over 10% from last year so far.... Oh and last year was a record year as well....

Royal Navy and RAF Search and Rescue crews have had a busy start to 2010 with their Sea King helicopter crews responding to various call-outs due to the severe weather conditions across the country.
The RAF Search and Rescue (SAR) Force Chief of Staff, Wing Commander Pete Lloyd, said:
