JAA Class 1 Medical in the US

Hey Guy's

As far as I know, the INITIAL JAA Class 1 medical examination is a a complex and expensive one, since you have to go to several doctors.

My question is, can I obtain my inital JAA CLASS 1 medical in the US and if so, where would it be and how much would it cost ?

Thanks for the input,

Falko

No - the initial will have to be done in JAA land; the CAA at Gatwick if you opt to go through the UK.

Renewals can be carried out by local AMEs who are authorised to Class 1 level.

It is only money...

It is a snip at about 250 quid, as I recall but you do get a very, very thorough medical for your money. Have your credit card handy for the dragon at the desk and be aware that you need to book well in advance, when groveling and whining helped me get an earlier date than the one she first told me was available.

You start with an eye exam that has to be completed before the CAA medical. It is done by a normal optometrist, when there are several in a nearby, large shopping centre in Crawley. This costs extra, of course. There is a cheap bus from the main terminal to the shopping centre and back, I think. Enjoy the ride because that will be the last thing that is cheap about getting a JAR licence!

I noticed the CAA jave changed the rules as well. Back in 2006 if you had a ICAO (eg FAA) CPL then you were exempt from certain parts of the JAA Class one initial test, reducing the price down to about £180.

Not any more!

So If I had my initial done in the UK, but it's since expired, can I do a renewal outside the UK with one of the docs from the above AME list ?
Would save me a trip back home to the UK.....

Suggest you contact them direct?

Medical Examiners Outside Of The United Kingdom

Medical Examiners with numbers in the series 10,000 can examine to class 1 and class 2 standards.
would seem to answer your question.

My recommendation is that you contact the CAA to confirm whether or not they will give you the same credits towards IR renewal for a non-UK military IR.
